Summary
Rockefeller was the quintessential industrialist. He created an industry out of nascent oil and gas start-ups during a time when none existed. His strategies and tactics may not have been approved by all, but he was certain he was doing God’s work.
We live in a world today that is based on the actions of John D. Rockefeller. Everything we do and how we live are the result of oil and its power. This inherent structure is based on what one man did when the oil industry was just starting off. He was strategic in his thinking, choosing to enter the refining side of the oil industry instead of the exploring and drilling aspect of it. He started with one refinery and then quickly bought up more than 90 percent of his competitors in the state within a few short years.
The story of Rockefeller as told in this audiobook provides a deep view of the oil industry and is told from a very human and real perspective. It looks at the events that shaped his life, from the shenanigans of his crooked father to the pleasant and philanthropic old man that he became. It is a story that is both instructive and interesting. It is a story of America itself told from the perspective of one of the world’s most successful men who rose from nothing and set the world on its path - a path that we still traverse today almost a century after his passing.
Listen to this audiobook and learn about the conversations and twists and turns that were part of John D. Rockefeller’s life. Feel what he felt as he navigated happiness and disappointment, clarity, and confusion.

This is an interesting biography about John D. Rockefeller. It was interesting to see how he made his wealth and how he gave it away.

Americas' first billionaire
This book is very well written and researched. It follows JD's life and explores his family history as well as his business ventures. Many books have been written solely on his oil deals, this is not one of them. It gives a great look into the how and why of his dealings and deals with what few, if any, government regulations were in effect. I would recommend this book to anyone looking back at the Gilded age.

If you re into business
If you re into business and history - that's your book. As with anything, it's incredible to see business principle repeating themselves from then to now. Rockefeller is an impressive figure too. Worth the long listen.

Gets to the point
The book was short and to the point so you will get an overall picture of who John D Rockefeller was, I have listen several books on the American Titans or Robber Barons and I like to compare and align information to make sure I am getting a clear picture of who they were and this book is in alignment with other books I have listen.

Long book
Long book. I enjoyed the extensive research done by the author covering the time frame from his youth to the end of his remarkable life. Also the chapters dealing with his children, grandchildren, siblings, and business associates. The family was remarkable in the number of recipients of their wealth distribution.

I thought that the author did a really good job
I thought that the author did a really good job of portraying and describing how life was in the late 1800's and early 1900's. What an interesting, long life that John D. Rockefeller, Sr. had.

Fascinating
I dived into my first J. R. MacGregor book with only a basic knowledge of John D. Rockefeller. This is an immensely comprehensive work and although I found most of this fascinating . However, for anyone looking for the definitive examination of Rockefeller’s life and his place in the transformation of the US industrial economy I’d say you’ve found it!

It's a pretty thorough book
It's a pretty thorough book. I am listening it on a ausible so I haven't looked at how many chapter it actually is! I should have taken notes as there is a lot of information and I don't remember all of it but I liked learning. My only critique is that while the author spends a lot of time on Standard Oil history and organization, I was still not convinced how the company was organized was completely illegal for the time period.
