Summary
From debut novelist Jason June comes a moving and hilarious sex-positive teen rom-com about the complexities of first loves, first hookups, and first heartbreaks - and how to stay true to yourself while embracing what you never saw coming, that’s perfect for fans of Sandhya Menon and Becky Albertalli.
There’s one thing Jay Collier knows for sure - he’s a statistical anomaly as the only out gay kid in his small rural Washington town. While all his friends can’t stop talking about their heterosexual hookups and relationships, Jay can only dream of his own firsts, compiling a romance to-do list of all the things he hopes to one day experience - his Gay Agenda.
Then, against all odds, Jay’s family moves to Seattle, and he starts his senior year at a new high school with a thriving LGBTQIA+ community. For the first time ever, Jay feels like he’s found where he truly belongs. But as Jay begins crossing items off his list, he’ll soon be torn between his heart and his hormones, his old friends and his new ones...because after all, life and love don’t always go according to plan.

Amazing!
Loved it from start to finish! The positive sex talk is amazing and it shows the struggles of peer pressure and sex. The side characters are so funny like Max but also have a backstory. They're not just there for comedic relief or more people in the story, they have a story of their own and I found myself really rooting for them. At some points, The Mc was slightly unlikeable but that was resolved by him actually realizing the mistakes he made. no one is perfect and I was in a similar situation to him, having moved out of my close minded, mean environment into something more open and immediately having accepted the first guy I met as a boyfriend just because finally someone actually showed interest in me, even though I didn't have real feelings for him and then hurting him in the process.
Finally nonhomophobic jocks! I loved that Max was so popular at the school. You see it way too often that the gay kid is the outsider when that's mostly not true! My friend (the only openly gay boy in our year) is the most popular guy in our year because of his personality and everyone is really protective of him. Any homophobe is scrutinized by everyone else. I think the community needs more of that because just as much as gay people are stereotyped in straight media, the "Jocks are the bullying and heartless homophobe" stereotype is shown way to often in queer media. So the positive representation here with Damien and Max is so great! No one even second-guesses their friendship or Max being a cheerleader for him, they just accept it which makes me so happy!
Additionally, outing not being the Main story arc! I really love that this could have been a straight story because it kind of normalized the LGBT community rather than making it about the outing which makes us different from the others.
The narrator's voice also fits this character so well! It's amazingly fitting!
The only thing I didn't like as much, was the lists. In the paperback novel, I didn't mind them. I liked them actually, because if they weren't there I would have kept going over to the first list to see what Jay is talking about. However in the audiobook you couldn't skim over it, which made it a but boring as the list usually was a minute long. I'll stick with 5 stars though because neither the authors, nor the narrator was at fault for that!
Overall, this goes onto my list of favs!!!!

Wish it was me
Wow! What a great story. Enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes whilst still being realistic to what a teen can go through on the hunt for first love. The narration was super. Highly recommended.

Too Many Lists
Adorable in many ways, but maybe one to be ready rather than listened to. The same list, the gay agenda, is read again and again and again.

A very cute queer romcom!
Jay's Gay Agenda is a lovely story about blooming late but never losing your roots. I laughed, I gasped, I got slightly annoyed at the mentions of the list but overall I fell in love with a vibrant cast of characters who felt realised and honest.

A heartwarming story of young love.
A lovely story about first time relationships. Great for teens.
As I am old and a bit more jaded in the world I feel getting anyone to apologise and admit their mistakes especially with teenage peers, is unlikely.
So I admire the writers optimism, but perhaps they've grown up amongst better people than I did.
Enjoyed the song references. Glad to know both songs by Shawn Mendes and Lil Nas X, so maybe I'm older but not totally out of date.
An entertaining read.
