About this listen

Winner of the 2018 CAMEO Book to Audio Award

What begins as a routine journey on the luxurious Orient Express soon unfurls into Agatha Christie's most famous murder mystery. On board is the famous detective Hercule Poirot, and one man who, come morning, will be found dead, his compartment locked from the inside.

This Audible Original dramatisation follows the train as it's stopped dead in its tracks at midnight. The train's stranded passengers soon become suspects as the race to uncover the murderer begins before he or she strikes again.

This all-star production features lead performances from Tom Conti (The Dark Knight Rises, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence) as Hercule Poirot, Sophie Okonedo (After Earth, Hotel Rwanda and Ace Ventura) and Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes, V for Vendetta and Hancock) plus a full supporting cast and even sound effects recorded on the Orient Express itself.

Starring: Tom Conti as Hercule Poirot, Sophie Okonedo as Mary Debenham, Paterson Joseph as Colonel Arbuthnot, Walles Hamonde as Hector Macqueen, Jay Benedict as Monsieur Bouc, Jane Asher as Mrs Hubbard, Rula Lenska as Princess Dragonioff, Ruta Gedmintas as Countess Andrenyi, Eddie Marsan as Ratchett and Art Malik as the Narrator.

Also featuring: Marie Rabe, John Chancer, Cedric Cirotteau, Andreas Karras, Barnabas Reti, Cristina Catalina, Greg Canestrari, Harry Hadden-Paton, Christope Delesques, Atilla Akinci, Hakan Silahsiz and Jeff Gerard.

Editor reviews

Editors Select, November 2017

A train stuck in the snow carries a cultural mixture of passengers...and all of them suspects in a brutal murder. All, apart from the great detective Hercule Poirot, mais naturellement, who is tasked with finding the culprit in a case where all is, of course, not what it seems. This multicast drama version of one of Agatha Christie's best known mystery novels features Tom Conti, Sophie Okonedo, Jane Asher, Rula Lenska, Art Malik, and many more great actors from around the world. With a full SFX soundtrak and exclusive score, the drama follows our wryly funny, sharply intelligent, and often grumpy hero as he untangles the most tangled of icy webs to uncover the truth. One of my favourite books since early teenage years, MOTOE showcases Christie in expert form, transposed into an excitingly immersive and lively production from Audible Originals. —Rebecca, Audible UK

Critic reviews

"With a perfect accent and professional ease, Tom Conti becomes one of the most-beloved detectives in fiction, Hercule Poirot.... The entire cast has a wonderful time playing off Conti as the detective interviews the suspects one by one.... Even those who know this classic's clever ending will enjoy the production." My first foray into AC...

Well performed and enjoyable book.
However I have discovered that Ms Christie isn't alas my cup of tea.
Having said that I'm sure that officianados of AC will enjoy it immensely.

Classic story, well intepreted and acted

I'm not normally a fan of dramatisations, but this is very good. Hercule Poirot is his Belgian best, with all the other characters making up the required motley crew.

Performances - excellent, and in the latter stages the use of echo-like flashbacks is very good as well, to remind the listener of what happened - and to aid in following Poirot's deductions.

The only real problem with this book/dramatization is that it's such a classic everybody knows whodunit, so there's no real sense of mystery, although listening to Poirot as he deduces his way there is worth it.

All the characters play up to their racial stereotypes that Christie was famous for, but that only adds to the entertainment.

At 5 hours long I covered this in a week - and I'll probably listen again.

A great fast-paced listen!

I cant believe I've only seen Murder on the Orient Express in film and never read the book!
This audio-book was a fast paced enjoyable read. Every character had a voice actor that fit them perfectly, especially Tom Conti that played Herclue Poirot, he bought the story to life!!
Even though I knew how it would end (but not remembering a lot of the details), I found great enjoyment in figuring out how the murder had happened with just a few clues, and exactly what each part played in it.
It was a great little listen (5 hours or so), and I will definitely be listening/reading the others.

An excellent performance ..

What made the experience of listening to Murder on the Orient Express the most enjoyable?

I sat quietly on a rainy afternoon to listen to this Audible original recording and was immediately transported to the elegant world of detective, Hercule Poirot.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Murder on the Orient Express?

The characterisation make this quite memorable. Tom Conti in the iconic Poirot role ensures a strong character interpretation.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances? How does this one compare?

The performances throughout the narration of the story are very, very good.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I enjoyed the story very much, but I wasn’t moved to either laughter or tears.

Any additional comments?

Art Malik does a superb job as narrator and holds the story together with his customary charm.
