Japan is a volcanic country, and so it has a lot of hot springs. It is said that there are more than 3,000 hot spring areas throughout the country. 火山国である日本には温泉が多く、全国のあちこちに3000ヵ所以上の温泉地があるといわれています。
温泉には疲労回復や食欲増進などさまざまな効能があり、多くの温泉場では温泉の成分や効能が表示されています。
医学が発達していなかった時代には、人々は温泉に行くことで病や傷を治しました。
入ると美しい肌になれるという「美人の湯」や、安産に効能があるといわれる「子宝の湯」なども各地にあり、日本では休暇に温泉に行く人もたくさんいます。
温泉をリゾートとして楽しむ場合、特に自然の景色を楽しむことができる露天風呂が人気で、長野県の地獄谷温泉では、人間だけではなく野生の猿が温泉につかる光景も見られます。
