Summary

J is a student at a school deep in a forest far away from the rest of the world.

J is one of only twenty-six students, all of whom think of the school's enigmatic founder as their father. J's peers are the only family he has ever had. The students are being trained to be prodigies of art, science, and athletics, and their life at the school is all they know-and all they are allowed to know.

But J suspects that there is something out there, beyond the pines, that the founder does not want him to see, and he's beginning to ask questions. What is the real purpose of this place? Why can the students never leave? And what secrets is their father hiding from them?

Meanwhile, on the other side of the forest, in a school very much like J's, a girl named K is asking the same questions. J has never seen a girl, and K has never seen a boy. As K and J work to investigate the secrets of their two strange schools, they come to discover something even more mysterious: each other.

Great listen

I loved this story. This is one of the fist books that I was exited to keep listening as it was so captivating and exiting. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a good psychological thriller.

Definitely a fan

After reading Bird Box, and Malorie, and now Inspection, I'm officially a fan of Josh Malerman's work. Generally he crafts genuinely novel and harrowing visions of dystopia, he genuinely makes you root for the protagonists, whilst weaving tales where you're never really sure if things will end well and characters will find resolutions. I also like that his work has an unassuming feminist subtext so that that anyone can relate to his protagonists and empathise.

With respect to Inspection, we start with a slow burn you're not sure will go anywhere beyond dank, drab dystopia, but boy does it build and ultimately packs a hell of punch. No spoilers here, but I'll just say I didn't want it to end.

Overall I can't wait to see what this guy comes up with next.

The narration of this book was also excellent, with its seamless transitions, but distinct establishment of each character's voice. Very well done.

dreadful

Nothing happens, then a completely non shocking predictable ending. Uninteresting concept, poor characters. Awful.
