Summary

Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon wakes up in Florence disoriented and confused. He doesn't remember how he got there. But in an international mystery that takes him across Europe to save the world from a terrifying fate, he must decipher codes hidden in Renaissance artworks with only a few lines from Dante's Inferno to guide him.

Dan Brown’s new novel, Inferno, features renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon and is set in the heart of Europe, where Langdon is drawn into a harrowing world centred around one of history’s most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces.

As Dan Brown comments: "Although I studied Dante's Inferno as a student, it wasn't until recently, while researching in Florence, that I came to appreciate the enduring influence of Dante's work on the modern world. With this new novel, I am excited to take readers on a journey deep into this mysterious realm… a landscape of codes, symbols, and more than a few secret passageways."

Editor reviews

One of the most influential works of literature ever written, Dante’s Inferno, has been used as inspiration in the explosive Book Four in the Robert Langdon series, the action thriller audiobook, Inferno from award-winning author Dan Brown and narrated by American actor Paul Michael. Europe becomes a hunting ground for clues as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon follows an intense mystery encircled by Dante’s masterpiece work. The plot in this latest installment appears at first to be twisting and unpredictable but like all of Brown’s novels, comes together so intricately and flawless you are left stunned with its brilliance. very repetitive...

Really obvious details had to be spelled out very slowly and were repeated over and over again... drove me mad!

Unlike most I actually quite rate Dan Brown

I thoroughly enjoyed the Da Vinci Code (read not listened to) and tend to bristle at the often quite aggressive attitude taken towards Dan Brown who is, afterall, producing popular, readable fiction - not 'great' literature. Having said that I have not found other titles (such as Digital Fortress) living up to the Da Vinci Code standards.

I listen to my 'audible' books whilst walking the dogs; driving to the office; and doing boring domestic tasks such as ironing - which means I switch between listening on different devices. I therefore like stories that are not too complex to follow and that bowl along at a good rate. This story does just that.

No it is not as good as Da Vinci - and I did actually spot some of the 'twists' quite a long way off - but I did nevertheless want to know what happened at the end and I always looked forward to my next 'listen'. The travelogue and finite descriptions of works of art are a tribute to research but are on the whole completely unnecessary - they are different details to the trail left in the Da Vinci Code.

This is a far from perfect work but I personally think well worth a listen - and the reading absolutely superb.

Exciting, with lots of suspense

Would you listen to Inferno again? Why?

Yes - the plot is complex and I think a second hearing would show up things that I hadn't quite taken in before

What was one of the most memorable moments of Inferno?

Difficult to say, but I particularly enjoyed the interaction between the two main characters.

What does Paul Michael bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

His use of a variety of accents to show different characters gave clarity without turning it into a parody of impressions. Also the softening of his voice for female characters.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Fire and brimstone suspense!

Any additional comments?

My first audio book, thoroughly enjoyed it on long car journeys, can't wait for my next one!
