Summary

Across America a mysterious disease is turning ordinary people into raving, paranoid murderers who inflict brutal horrors on strangers, themselves, and even their own families. Working under the government’s shroud of secrecy, CIA operative Dew Phillips crisscrosses the country trying in vain to capture a live victim. With only decomposing corpses for clues, CDC epidemiologist Margaret Montoya races to analyze the science behind this deadly contagion. She discovers that these killers all have one thing in common–they’ve been contaminated by a bioengineered parasite, shaped by a complexity far beyond the limits of known science.

Meanwhile Perry Dawsey–a hulking former football star now resigned to life as a cubicle-bound desk jockey–awakens one morning to find several mysterious welts growing on his body. Soon Perry finds himself acting and thinking strangely, hearing voices . . . he is infected. The fate of the human race may well depend on the bloody war Perry must wage with his own body, because the parasites want something from him, something that goes beyond mere murder.

Critic reviews

"Sigler is masterful at grabbing the reader by the throat and refusing to let go. Just when I thought I knew what abyss he was leading me across, he knocked the bridge out from under... I think I screamed the whole way down." (Lincoln Child)
" Infected blends science fiction and horror into a pulpy masterpiece of action, terror, and suspense....Three recommendations: don't read it at night, or just after you've eaten a full meal, or if you're weak of heart....You've been warned! (James Rollins)

Body horror at it's best!

If this doesn't give you the crawlies you are made of stone.
Love this book.
Not the best SciFy ever since you start having some questions about the entire endeavor but still very gripping.

1st book of an author who has improved hugely

Having read Scott Sigler's brilliant Earthcore and Mount Fitz Roy read/performed by the equally brilliant Ray Porter, I decided to read this book which I had been put off before by the sample which sounded very amateurish. It was hard going at first... this author has clearly improved hugely over time, and he openly admits his voice isn't the best, especially for female parts.

However, after an hour or so I got used to the his voice and enjoyed the story.... he certainly has one hell of an imagination! Now looking forward to his second book, Contagion

Punchy, Gritty, Hard Hitting and often Gruesome

If you could sum up Infected in three words, what would they be?

Triangles ARE SCARY

What did you like best about this story?

The narration - by the author - was brilliant although the strange piece of music between scenes became a little bit annoying.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The numerous triangle explorations (not giving things away too much)

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The interesting way - with kitchen appliances and utensils - the main character engaged with the triangles. Once again, YOU GOTTA READ THIS.

Any additional comments?

It was great. Enough said.

brilliant eye watering story

listened to this set of books a few years ago on podcasts. I can afford to pay for them now and thought I'd get them in this form. Scott is a brilliant writer and story teller .

Gross yet engrossing

I have read several reviews where people wrote about how gross this book is and I wondered what they meant. Well, now I know. And it's absolutely true. Yet, it's engrossing, captivating - fun. My big challange was the narration. I think that Scott did a decent job, apart from the female voices, which is something he is well aware of, but I just didn't happen to like his way of narrating. It was especially unlucky that I the two previous books I listened to were narrated by the masterly Ray Porter... and Scotts voice did grow on me as the chapters went on... but still, no my cup of tea. I kept on listening because what Scott wrote and not what/how he read it :)

Starts off great, but goes downhill - it's ok

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

If you'd asked me that half way through I'd have said yes. After reading the whole book, no I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Rubbish, but in my opinion the second half pretty much was.

What aspect of Scott Sigler’s performance might you have changed?

I really didn't rate the narration, very monotone. There are worse out there but it did take me a while to get into it.

Do you think Infected needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. Although I am aware there are some out there already.

Any additional comments?

It starts off really well and follows a couple of characters all experiencing something bad. It's well written, graphic and very immersive. It then gets silly and very average.

Thiird listen still great!!

The best audiobook I've ever read. No bout a doubt it. Setting up the Siglerverse beautifully. Fantastic science linked together beautifully with stomping action. but the real genius is in the characterization. setting up some of my favourite characters including Murrray Longworth, Scary Perry Dorsey, Dew Phillips and Margaret Motoyah. just watch their character arcs develop.

Sci-fi Horror With Humour Aplenty

❤️ Evil triangles are taking over the world. One orifice at a time. It’s dark and twisted and... Funny. And if there’s one thing I love more than sci-fi, it’s funny sci-fi.

💙 This ticked all my alien invasion criteria, but with a truly inventive twist. The main characters were likeable, the plot had a good pace. Overall a thumbs up. ______________________
SOUNDBITE

🎧 Scott Seigler dusts off his podcasting vocals to narrate his own book and it works. He does a fantastic job. Excellent comic timing, brilliant voices. He even pulls off a little girl convincingly. Tip of the triangle to you, sir.

SHALL I COMPARE THEE TO...

When I say it’s funny, I don’t mean Douglas Adams funny. More like David Wong. Kind of cute, tongue in cheek, but also graphic.

This also reminded me of the horror saga, Swan Song. The villainous aspects had a similar tone and there was that sense that when things got ugly, they did so with a capital U. Actually, capitalise the whole word. It’s that bad. But in a good way.

Not for the squeamish......

Where does Infected rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Although not in my top five it's still a good book, but defintely not for the faint hearted there are some quite graphic scenes dealing with the......outbreak (not wanting to spoil anything). At times I did think about throwing in the towel but it does pick up pace and in the end it left me wanting to get the second in the series. It's a genre that has beeen covered quite a lot but I felt this was quite a unique take on it.

The author narrates the book and at the end he gives an honest review of his performance, especially his attempt at the female characters, overall I think his enthusiam for the story came through. There's also some nice musical touches that add drama to the overall performance.
