Summary

Grace Dove, a young woman with mental issues, a twice-failed suicide undergoing a new type of therapy.... Colin McLeod, a wounded soldier rendered catatonic by his severe PTSD, languishing in a military rehabilitation center.... Two people damaged to the limits of their endurance.

Seeking sanctuary from the horrors of real life, Grace and Colin find themselves brought together in a fantasy world of their own creation; they call it their Garden of Stones. There they talk out their problems, comfort and support each other, and plan their futures, although it is not plain sailing by any means. Their time in paradise, however, runs concurrently with events happening in the real world. Life goes on, until Colin's is put in danger, so he withdraws entirely into the Garden to save himself. If he stays there, he will die and Grace has very little time to get him back. If she fails, both he and the Garden will be lost to her forever.

Excellent audiobook, story and performance.

Would you listen to In the Garden of Stones again? Why?

Yes. It is beautifully performed by the narrator who has a talent for making each character distinct and there is enough going on that I am sure I would find new things to enjoy on a second, third or even fourth listen through.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the fantasy element and the main characters. This is a gentle, engaging tale without it being bland. There are plenty of unexpected happenings and it kept me engaged throughout.

What does Steve Worsley bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He has a very pleasant voice to listen to and he gives the characters real personality in ways I might not have done as a reader left to my own devices.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed a few times and I had a lump in my throat and tears in places.

Any additional comments?

I think if someone enjoys Doctor Who or enjoyed Tom's Secret Garden as a child then they will enjoy this as well. This is definitely a grown up read but has a similar flavour to those, I think,
