Summary

Life. It is our one only great opportunity, but an opportunity to do what? Since the beginning of humanity, God’s existence has been questioned, debated, and perplexed. Most people, whether of faith or not, believe it is impossible to answer this great question of God’s existence. What is a life well lived? What is the purpose of my life? Or, for that matter, anyone's life? What is possible in this enormous gift we have been entrusted with? What is life? These are some of the questions most of us ask, at some point in our life, but the greatest question of all, that affects us all is, “Does God exist?”

I grew up in a family with nearly no religion in our home. My Father said he didn’t believe there was a God, however, he said his official position was that of an agnostic. My Mother was Catholic, but we rarely discussed God, and never once did our family go to mass at a Catholic church. My point is this, as a child and young man growing up, I didn’t know what to believe about God and religion. Was God a myth as I heard so often from my Father, or was he real? If there is no God, then we are accountable to no one but ourselves. We create our morality and everything revolves around what we want.

Life is a single opportunity in a zero-sum game to compete and get as much as we can from life. Our ego and pride are the driving forces for becoming someone in life. To be more, to accomplish more, to have more, and to stand out from the crowd. Life is ALL about me! However, if God does exist then this changes everything. We then have the opportunity for eternal life, but we are also accountable for every thought and action!

The idea of never dying is incredibly enticing, but how believable is that? When we look around at our life and the lives around the world with all its problems, we have to ask ourselves “If there is a God, then why is life so hard and the world such a mess? How can God have so much power, but he can’t get human life on planet Earth right?
