THE TOP FIVE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

In 1914, war feels far away to Henry Gaunt and Sidney Ellwood. They're too young to enlist, and anyway, Gaunt is fighting his own private battle - an all-consuming infatuation with the dreamy, poetic Ellwood - not having a clue that his best friend is in love with him too.

When Gaunt's mother asks him to enlist, he signs up immediately, relieved to escape his overwhelming feelings. But Ellwood and their classmates soon follow him to the front. Ellwood and Gaunt find love in the trenches – but just as war brought them together, it can tear them apart…
An epic, unforgettable love story between two soldiers in the First World War, In Memoriam is a breath-taking debut.

Utterly beautiful

What a stunning story, with attention, consideration, and sensitivity down to the very last detail. A fantastically produced audiobook too - couldn’t fault it. A new favourite author found!

Poignant and captivating

This book broke my heart, but I could not have loved it more. Stunning, haunting, devastating - one I know I will stay with me for the rest of my reading days.

Brilliant narration

Narration is really excellent. Story borderline contrived in places but the writing is brilliant. Very absorbing. Connection to historical events at the end was interesting.

Utterly Moving and exquisitely written

I thought I had read enough about World War I, the trenches, and the tragedy. I was wrong. This novel brings a whole new dimension to the storytelling around that period. I loved the characters and the dialogue. It has a cinematic sweep. Can’t wait to see the movie!

Touching and so very sad but utterly beautiful writing

Fantastic from start to finish. Highly recommended. Some gruelling war scenes but so believable and as we all know, true.
The power of love overcomes all the obstacles.

Excellent

Beautifully written and narrated; I cried, laughed and cried again. The depiction of what we would now call PTSD is particularly accurate and well researched. This deserves enduring popularity.

Outstanding

Thought provoking, sympathetic, shocking, moving. Don't think I've ever listened with such a sustained lump in my throat. Beautiful characterisation and wonderfully read

I could not stop listening ….

I loved everthing about this book.
The love, passion and the terrible historical setting where it is all set.
I could not stop listening whilst feeling the fear and raw emotion on every page. A wonderful read.
