About this listen
Through a candid narrative, parents describe the surreal experience of having twin sons with severe autism. Valerie Hall's episodic text chronicles Jack's and James' condition as it transforms family life and poses ominous implications for the future. Her reactions to her own life in a world where autism makes the rules are candid and unfiltered. She rejects the tropes of most autism literature, spurning both memoir and how-to prescriptions. Instead she invites you to encounter Jack and James as she does, as boys who are both beautiful and broken. The day-to-dayness of her account has the disturbing effect of allowing the listener to step into a world where expectations are upended and encounters take on an aura of the surreal. The audiobook includes the narrative of the book; photographs (by Bruce Hall) are available to view on the Visual Summit website.

Immersed in compassion
"Immersed" is written and narrated with immense candour. It's humbling. In Valerie Hall's sharing of what it is like as a family to find their world changed by having twin sons with profound autism, inadvertently the book speaks for other families in similar situations. I have met parents of children whose daily lives are consumed beyond measure in trying to support their children with complex needs. Often they feel it's an endless battle to access appropriate educational and support services, plus essential care provision. Valerie Hall acknowledges the support they receive as a family, still this is not a given nor is it always ideal. Bruce Hall's photographs are incredibly strong and personal, yet his images are an insight into the worlds of many children with autism. He is a very fine professional photographer. This book will resonate with families whose experiences are similar. Also for those who may not be directly affected by autism but wish to learn more, I highly recommend "Immersed".
