About this listen
From the author of the Waterstones Book of the Month Our Fathers comes a compelling domestic comedy about complex family dynamics, mental health and the intricacies of sibling relationships.
For Alice and Hanna, saint and sinner, growing up is a trial. There is their mother, who takes a divide-and-conquer approach to child-rearing, and their father, who takes an absent one. There is their older brother, Michael, whose disapproval is a force to be reckoned with. There is the catastrophe that is never spoken of but has shaped everything.
As adults, Alice and Hanna must deal with disappointments in work and in love, as well as increasingly complicated family tensions and lives that look dismayingly dissimilar to what they'd intended. They must look for a way to repair their own fractured relationship and they must finally choose their own approach to their dominant mother: submit or burn the house down. And they must decide at last whether life is really anything more than (as Hanna would have it) a tragedy with a few hilarious moments.

Sad it’s over!
Brilliant, funny and touching depiction of sibling relationships and mental health. It’s very relatable account of family dynamics and I’m sad it’s over

A wonderful story
Took me a while to get in to this one but once I was, I was hooked. A fantastic observation of every day life. Of the highs and lows of family life. Of mental health and relationships. I especially enjoyed the description of their father, who so mirrors my own in his ever changing personality and reliance on his wife. I look forward to seeing more work from this author

The book of 2022. Stunning.
Beautifully written, in every sense. A little bit lost now it is over and absolutely one to come back to.

Wouldn’t recommend this book
I disliked the characters, especially the weak pathetic Alice.
The book skips between time in places without making it clear and confusing in places.
I was relieved when I had finished it!!

The inner workings of the mind exquisitely revealed
Rebecca Wait conveys the inner thoughts and anxieties of the characters with such insight and perception that the reader feels attuned to each and every one from Celia the maligned mother to her unidentical twin daughters - people pleaser Alice and overwrought Hannah- and bemused son Michael as they navigate the confusions of childhood and face the slights and resignations of adulthood. Wait does this with deadpan humour.
Tasmin Kennard’s delivery as the reader is wonderful. She acts the voices of a variety of characters without overkill, bringing the right dose of accent and expression making it a pleasure to listen.
For those who enjoy in depth analysis of characters and the complexities of family interaction this is a must. But rest assured it’s an easy, enjoyable listen too.

Brilliant, insightful and funny
This book is a brilliant insight into the complexities of family relationships. The author delves into the personalities of each of the characters and the impact that each has on the other. The script is very funny in parts too…. A lovely balance of dealing with some serious mental health issues and the very humorous side of life. The author captures the listener/ reader’s attention even with what might be described as the mundanity of life but somehow draws you in. Very clever. The narrator is fantastic too.

It gets better at the end..
Overall I’m glad I listened to this story although 1/3rd of the way in I was ready to give up on it. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, there’s a lot of angst and drama just like in normal life, so not sure why I would want to experience all the angst in a book too..? I know., you must be sorry I feel that way.. :-)

Families!
I enjoyed it very much, narrator was excellent and the subtle humour made me laugh out loud. The realistic portrayal of sibling angst, mental health and the efforts of a loving but overwhelming mother are very realistic. I gave the story 4 stars as I felt the ending was uplifting but not necessarily realistic.

Very gripping
Well read/performed and the story itself is very gripping. Mental health struggles and family dynamics are described very realistically and relatable. Would definitely recommend!
