Summary

Miles Pussett is a former steeplechase jockey but he now gets his adrenalin rush from hurling himself, head first, down the Cresta Run, a three-quarter-mile long Swiss ice chute, reaching speeds of up to 80 miles per hour.

Finding himself in St Moritz during the same weekend as White Turf, when high-class horse racing takes place on the frozen lake, Miles gets talked into helping out with the horses. It is against his better judgement.

Seven years before, he left horseracing behind and swore he would never return. When he discovers something suspicious is going on in the races, something that may have a profound impact on his future life, Miles begins to search for answers. But someone is adamant to stop him—and they’ll go to any lengths to do it...

Different format, same great writing.

After reading the reviews of the book I was unsure about ordering the Audible version.
The story wasn't about out and out detective work but covered mental health in a sympathetic way. It also highlighted the struggle many jockies have to make the wait.
This coupled with the history of the Cresta Run and the White Turf racing was very educational.
I wondered why the Audible version took so long to come out but I can only assume they were waiting for Martin Jarvis to read it. It was well worth the wait as it was read beautifully.
Hope the next one is not another 2 years.

Such a shame

Martin Jarvis is a fine actor and he has done previous voiceovers with skill. Sadly, his reading of Dick/Felix Francis are dreadful, over stressing words and over acting to such an extent that he made this unlistenable.Felix Francis should stick to writing racing thrillers not this
over emphasis on mental health-not the forum and very unsuccessful. A waste of money

Not up to usual standard

Struggled to complete -weak story, frustrating main character who I just couldn't like, even h8s name was awful! The secondary characters were predictable. Feels like it was rushed, nothing new from same now tired MO. No real plot line other than alcoholism and PTSD. I imagine the subjects could act as a trigger for some. This could well be the last Francis book I will read which is incredibly sad. Narration patchy and disengaging

Excellent story

Another good story line from Felix Francis leaving the listener/reader guessing to the last few lines who is the protagonist. I’ve loved all his plot lines, truly a great story teller and Martin Jarvis is perfect as the reader, clear diction and intonation

Better than average

Truly more about addiction, alcohol, drugs, failure, than it is about horses. And because of that, far above so many “mystery’s” in that it gives us an insight into what destroys, and what heals. A well written story, and an introduction to a very human character. Thanks from these listeners.

A very emotional book

Not a typical Francis book with a traditional white knuckle winter sport also featured but the study of alcohol dependency and mental health took its toll and my emotions certainly kicked in.
A really worthwhile read and plenty to think about on mental health and addiction now I have finished it.
Beautifully read by Martin Jarvis.

Can't get into it

Ponderous narration not helping a story that has failed to grip me. Sad, as am a lover of Dick Francis And Felix Francis books.

Boring

Nothing happened for three quarters of the book. By the time it did, I had already lost the will to live. Returning it as it certainly isn't worth a credit.
