Summary
They say I'm a murderer.
Six years ago, Kate Reynolds was found holding the body of her best friend, covered in blood, and clutching the knife that killed her.
I plead guilty.
Kate has been in prison ever since, but now her sentence is up. She is being released.
But the truth is, I didn't do it.
There's only one person who can help: Private Investigator Madison Attallee, the first officer on the scene all those years ago.
But there's someone out there who doesn't want Kate digging up the past. Someone who is willing to keep the truth buried at any cost.
Robert Galbraith meets Susie Steiner in this gripping debut from Niki Mackay.

Alright, but...,
The many voices seem written too similarly and the characters are all a bit predictable, it would be nice to have a PI who wasn’t a mess!!
Ok but doesn’t stand up to close inspection.

I'm floored!
First of all, as a fellow writer, I was impressed with Niki's skill to weave vocabulary and dialogue. Her points are concise with a flow that is easily followed. This too had much to do with the excellent manner the narrators handled the different chapters and voiced the character's perspectives they played. It gave the story a fun dynamic that you get while watching a film and made the bouncing perspectives between chapters that much more entertaining to listen to.
When I started this novel I wasn't sure what to expect. In all honesty, I don't really read crime novels, but I decided to give this one a try. The beginning was jarring and left me curious to see where the author planned to go. And as the story contined, and we are introduced to the characters, they were relatable and interesting and not at all over the top (which I've had problems with for many typical crime novels where the characters are often very underdeveloped to push the mystery of the murder plot forward like pawns on a chess board.) That wasn't the case with these people, and I found myself caring for most of them (even some that would typically not merit sympathy.)
As the plot unfolded, the author left crumbs of possibilities to who the murderer could be. I usually grow bored by the last half having already figured out who the killer is and am waiting for the rest of the characters to catch up, but there were so many twists and turns in this novel that I can say that I didn't fully piece it together until the actual characters did, and that is quite a thrill!
The wrap up was also very fulfilling leaving all points of the story neatly tied up and a sense of finality to read the conclusion. I am pleasantly surprised just how much I enjoyed this story and will definitely be reading more from this author in the future.

Started good but obvious ending
Narration was a little odd and sometimes difficult to follow who said what.
The story started great and kept me guessing but I had worked out the ‘twist’ before it was revealed.

Good story, shame about the narration
Some of the narration was very wooden and badly read. I found this to be a distraction as this character features heavily in the book.
I found the story good and I would listen to
another book by the author - only with some recasting.

Good storyline
Lots of twists to this, but I thought the narration was a bit lifeless. Most of the time it sounded like it was being read, and there wasn’t much passion or feeling in the reading.
With better narrators this could have been a really tension builder. Shame because it was a good storyline.

Fantastic!
I really enjoyed I, Witness. The story had me intrigued from the very first page. I felt really engaged with Kate and with several of the other characters. Great storyline, well developed characters and excellent narration.

Interesting, good narrative.
Easy flowing narrative with enough drama and who? What? Why? to keep it very interesting until the end. Personally speaking I really enjoyed the book and see some good potential in the characters depicted for further instalments.
It mostly lost points to me because of certain parts of the narration.
Although the narration was good for the most part, although the actor playing Madison speaks far too quickly and it's a little difficult at times to understand which other character is supposed to be speaking. I do believe her voice is good as the lead P.I. I just don't think I could listen to a full audio book with just her as narrator as she doesn't voice act the other characters, maybe this was the way it was directed? We are very lucky to have such amazing voice actors now that things like the about sometimes bother me, I turned the speed down to 85% which helped a little.
Don't let it put you off it is narrated by four others as well so it's not a complete deal breaker.
I do hope to read more from Niki Mackay this is a very good first impression.
