About this listen

I tread quietly up the plush carpeted stairs. There’s no-one here to see me as Cassie and Jon’s bedroom door creaks gently open. I’ve watched them from afar for so long. Now I’m finally in their house. But there’s no time to waste. I’m here for a reason, and I’m going to get what I came for, whatever the cost…

I open the front door and there’s Amy, smiling sweetly and ready to help. She’s been a lifesaver since Jon and I moved here–from walking the dog to picking up my little son Teddy from nursery last minute. I’m so lucky we met in the playground the first day we arrived. Amy is more than just a good friend. My only friend, really.

Whenever Amy and Jon exchange glances I’m sure it seems like they’ve met before, even though Jon swears they haven’t. But then again Jon recognises lots of people from his childhood round here without truly knowing them. I’ve put it out of my mind. Just like my fear of being watched. I need to remember I’m safe now.

But today, when I turn up at Teddy’s nursery, I learn I was so, so wrong. The teacher tells me Amy picked him up an hour ago. Now they have both disappeared.

I am frantic. I will do anything to get my son back. I should have known I can’t trust anyone. Then the phone rings, and I know what I have to do…

An utterly absorbing and shocking psychological thriller with the most unexpected of twists, this novel is perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Mark Edwards and The Woman in the Window.

fun but the author has never owned a gsd!

it's a fun thriller but as one of the side chatacters is sukie the German shepherd.. you would think the author knows the breed! Not sure any of ours over the years would just semi perk up at the mention of a walk nor ignore household tensions.

My 2nd listen by this author. Just as good as the first one if not better.

Brilliant book - listened in 2 sittings. The story really kept you on the edge of your seat and was gripping right to the end. The narrator was just as good and I have another new author to listen to now. It was a well huge 5 star rating.

Another amazing book by Maria that kept me awake through the night

I have been waiting for Maria‘s latest book for sometime, and it has definitely been worse the weight.

The book had many twist and turns, and even at the end unexpected things happen.

It will count as one of my favourite books for a long time!!!

Decent enough

I enjoyed this book and thought it was well written. I found one of the narrators a tad annoying at the start, but she grew on me. The only thing I'd say is - as a member of law enforcement - the criminal justice side of things needs work. I understand it's fiction, but you don't convict a teenage girl of murder based on the say so of another teenage girl. You'd need DNA evidence, to trace who purchased the drugs etc. and even then, it'd be classed as negligent manslaughter at best. Nobody would get 20 years! On the other hand, kidnapping a child and holding them hostage, alongside holding others hostage at knife point would land you a lengthy sentence, whether you were the victim of a miscarriage of justice or not...

AWFUL NARRATION

I couldn’t get past chapter 3, mainly because the narrator had a croaky voice and it drive me mad. She needed to clear her throat and had an awful fake sounding northern accent. All bouncy and sing song. The main character is weak and a cliche of a stay at home mum moaning about missing work. And the kid is called Teddy which is a name I hate (not a reason to dislike the book but it added to it I’m afraid!). The husband sounds like a bully but it was written as if by numbers. Nothing gripping about the story and I got my credit back.

Awful!

Had good elements but then the characters were all ‘unbelievable’ you can hear the construct which appears to be patched together.

The protagonist, clueless and unrealistic. The choices all characters make, seem ridiculous. The only character to appear normal is Teddy! A 4 yr old boy. The antagonist behaviour does not match up with the character profile. All a waste of time.
