About this listen
Exclusively from Audible
In this coming of age story, Dodie Smith introduces the visionary and eccentric character of seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain. The youngest daughter in a family of impoverished artists, it is her imagination and writing that takes us away from the ramshackle old English castle where they live, and towards an intriguing tale of husband-hunting and light-hearted sibling rivalry. With the arrival of their new landlords, the impossibly handsome and wealthy American brothers, Neil and Simon Cotton, the Mortmains are roused from their stupor and moved to action. Despite developing feelings for the younger of the two brothers, Cassandra's beautiful sister, Rose, plots to marry the eldest heir in a desperate attempt to escape the poverty which surrounds her.
When Cassandra finds herself falling in love for the very first time with the same man as her sister, she explores her mixed emotions through her writing, making this a story which revels in irony and ambiguity.
A deceptively complex and intelligent story, I Capture the Castle is Smith's first published work and one which will undoubtedly and simultaneously make listeners tut, laugh and reminisce.

An absolute classic
I normally read mystery and psihological books bit this is a classic and thought I should give it a go even if it's not my style.
I absolutely loved it.
it is different but the characters are somehow relatable even if I don't have a sister, I don't live in a castle and my family is nothing like Kassandra's family.
I would most definitely recommend the book.

Perfection
Jenny Agutter was ideal to narrate, and this novel is why Audible was invented! I lost myself entirely in this gentle yet vivid coming of age tale.

It captured my heart
Such a lovely story with an utterly engaging heroine and an eccentric cast if characters around her. Jenny Agutter's performance was excellent with her different accents and intonations. I loved it!

Great classic brilliantly read.
It's many years since I read this book and was not sure whether I'd still like it. I wasn't disappointed. I enjoyed it even more than I did all those years ago. The story's coming of age and first love theme draws you in and carries you along.

Slightly worthy, but excellent
I enjoyed this immensely, although the indulgent use of language and worthiness might not appeal to all. The plot does have the occasional interesting twist.

Justice done.
Really nervous about listening to this as it is my favourite book and has been butchered on screen and radio. Jenny has done it justice though- I thoroughly enjoyed it

Kept me enthralled
I first read this book as a young teenager and loved it. I decided to try it again in old age. At first I thought , oh dear, this isn’t going to work at all, but then found I was becoming more and more interested in the Mortmain family and I thoroughly enjoyed the book once again. Jenny Aguter reads it beautifully which helps too.

Classic and brilliant
This is a wonderful book read by a narrator who I think could not be improved on. It's a gem, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
