About this listen
In his book Humility, first published in 1895, the South African pastor Andrew Murray points to the example of Jesus who made himself nothing by taking the nature of a servant. The author gives this as an example of true nobility and regards it as the distinguishing feature of discipleship. Murray calls on all Christians to turn from pride, study the character of Christ and empty themselves in order to be filled with God’s grace.
Murray identifies three motives that urge us to humility, involving the individual as a creature, a sinner, and a saint. The first is in Jesus as Son of Man, the second offers the only way of returning to our right place as creatures, and the third is in the mystery of grace, when humility becomes the consummation of eternal blessedness. Murray’s description of true humility is “the displacement of self by the enthronement of God”.
