About this listen
Anyone who reads this will be delighted by the great common sense of Hudson’s observations and insights. A splendid book...chock-full of goodness and I can’t think of anyone I know who wouldn’t benefit from reading it.
Marcus Berkmann, Daily Mail
'A brilliant, brilliant book.'
Chris Evans
What is the connection between crawling through a jungle and your ‘to do’ list? What can ejecting out of a stealth bomber teach you about the importance of thinking the worst? What can surviving in extreme situations teach us about surviving everyday life?
John Hudson, Chief Survival Instructor to the British Military, knows what it takes to survive. Combining first-hand experience with 20 years of studying the choices people have made under the most extreme pressure, How to Survive is a lifetime’s worth of wisdom about how to apply the principles of survival to everyday life.
The cornerstone of military survival (surviving anything) is understanding the relationship between effort, hope and goals – a mindset that can be transposed anytime, anywhere. In How to Survive you will learn how this template for survival can be applied to any situation in your everyday life.
Through gripping first-hand accounts of near disaster and survival stories from across the extreme world you will learn that by following these principles you can develop the mindset that will allow you to make better decisions under pressure, which are as equally applicable to first dates and presentations as to climbing Everest and getting lost at sea.
'When it comes to survival and getting out of trouble, listen to this man. John is the real deal.' - Levison Wood

An inspiration to plan ahead and stay focused
Excellent book highly recommended. John reads this clearly with added humour. Full of useful information attached to true accounts of adversity ,the psychology behind the situation with a means of applying it to daily life. I like the fact its not like other survival instruction books but more of a thinking mans book. Mental stamina, gaining knowledge and self preparedness which is key to any survival situation. This looks at survival from many angles and a book you can keep referring back too and making notes from. Thank you John.

A Great Book on Survival: Lessons from John Hudson
John Hudson's "How to Survive" is a captivating and insightful guide on surviving the most challenging environments. As the British Military’s Chief Survival Instructor, Hudson brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, making this book both informative and engaging.
One of the standout features of this book is Hudson's storytelling ability. His narration is not only clear and instructive but also delivered with the perfect tone, making it a delightful listening experience. His voice adds an extra layer of engagement, drawing the listener into the survival scenarios he describes.
The book is filled with both successful and unsuccessful survival stories, each accompanied by an analysis of the reasons behind the outcomes. These real-life examples are not only fascinating but also serve as practical lessons on what to do—and what not to do—in extreme situations.
Hudson's approach goes beyond the typical survival manual. Instead of focusing solely on technical skills, he emphasizes the importance of mindset and psychological resilience. This holistic approach makes the book applicable not just for adventurers but for anyone looking to develop a stronger, more adaptable mindset in everyday life.
Overall, "How to Survive" is a highly recommended read. Whether you're interested in survival techniques or simply enjoy well-told stories of human endurance, this book offers valuable insights and an enjoyable listening experience.

Superb! Everyone should read/listen to this book!
The lessons this book teaches can be used by everyone in their daily lives. Through his story telling of historic survival situations (both good & bad) and personal experience of extreme situations John sets out simple but effective ways to be prepared and deal with whatever life throws at you. Irrespective of wether we get caught in an extreme situation or if we are just trying to survive another day at the office we all need to adopt a “survival mindset”! (There’s your next book title John). Such a re great listen/read I’ve done both at least twice so far to date!

A refreshing perspective on surviving emergencies and the grind of modern life.
There’s a lot to learn here from one of the world’s leading experts in survival, evasion, resistance and escape. Combining practical advice with fascinating case studies and cutting edge psychology, John Hudson has written an engaging book that stresses the importance of what’s between you ears, over the gadgets in your rucksack or the apps on your phone. A great listen that left me craving the outdoors and a nice hot brew.
