About this listen

Anyone who reads this will be delighted by the great common sense of Hudson’s observations and insights. A splendid book...chock-full of goodness and I can’t think of anyone I know who wouldn’t benefit from reading it.
Marcus Berkmann, Daily Mail

'A brilliant, brilliant book.'
Chris Evans

What is the connection between crawling through a jungle and your ‘to do’ list? What can ejecting out of a stealth bomber teach you about the importance of thinking the worst? What can surviving in extreme situations teach us about surviving everyday life?

John Hudson, Chief Survival Instructor to the British Military, knows what it takes to survive. Combining first-hand experience with 20 years of studying the choices people have made under the most extreme pressure, How to Survive is a lifetime’s worth of wisdom about how to apply the principles of survival to everyday life.
The cornerstone of military survival (surviving anything) is understanding the relationship between effort, hope and goals – a mindset that can be transposed anytime, anywhere. In How to Survive you will learn how this template for survival can be applied to any situation in your everyday life.

Through gripping first-hand accounts of near disaster and survival stories from across the extreme world you will learn that by following these principles you can develop the mindset that will allow you to make better decisions under pressure, which are as equally applicable to first dates and presentations as to climbing Everest and getting lost at sea.

Critic reviews

John is the top survival brain in the British Forces today. He trains the trainers. His expertise extends far beyond this area into the deeper ethos behind survival . . . He is what a lot of so-called “survival experts” want to be (Alf Evans, UK Military Aviation Survival Equipment Trials Officer)

An inspiration to plan ahead and stay focused

Excellent book highly recommended. John reads this clearly with added humour. Full of useful information attached to true accounts of adversity ,the psychology behind the situation with a means of applying it to daily life. I like the fact its not like other survival instruction books but more of a thinking mans book. Mental stamina, gaining knowledge and self preparedness which is key to any survival situation. This looks at survival from many angles and a book you can keep referring back too and making notes from. Thank you John.

A great book everyone should hear.

This is the type of book that should be taught at school.
then a week away for the children to practice what this type of all round life skills are within this book.
Not just survival in the wild but life skills for the office and day to day.

Superb! Everyone should read/listen to this book!

The lessons this book teaches can be used by everyone in their daily lives. Through his story telling of historic survival situations (both good & bad) and personal experience of extreme situations John sets out simple but effective ways to be prepared and deal with whatever life throws at you. Irrespective of wether we get caught in an extreme situation or if we are just trying to survive another day at the office we all need to adopt a “survival mindset”! (There’s your next book title John). Such a re great listen/read I’ve done both at least twice so far to date!

A refreshing perspective on surviving emergencies and the grind of modern life.

There’s a lot to learn here from one of the world’s leading experts in survival, evasion, resistance and escape. Combining practical advice with fascinating case studies and cutting edge psychology, John Hudson has written an engaging book that stresses the importance of what’s between you ears, over the gadgets in your rucksack or the apps on your phone. A great listen that left me craving the outdoors and a nice hot brew.

Much more than just survival

I was sceptical about starting this book as I expected it to be more regurgitation of every other survival book but I was pleasantly surprised. Even though I was familiar with most of the tails of survival used in the book the focus on the brain's chemistry & psychological lessons we can apply to our daily lives was refreshing, informative & entertaining. After listening to the book I now can make much more sense of the physiological reactions we all have to situations in our daily life as it was put into the proper context. Ie oyr animalistic brains that have evolved to survive are failing to adapt to our present, actually very safe, lives. I would definitely recommend. I might listen to it again.
