Summary

A 2024 REESE WITHERSPOON BOOK CLUB PICK!

'One of the sexiest, smartest, funniest, and most effective novels I've read in a long time . . . I'll read anything she writes' EMILY HENRY
'Without doubt one of my favourite romance novels of the year . . . smart, rich and emotional' BETH O'LEARY

Helen Zhang is the bestselling author who can't write her own happy-ever-after.

Grant Shepard is the screenwriter with the movie-star looks who can't afford his therapist.

When the two of them are put together to adapt Helen's books for television, it should be a dream come true. Helen can start a new life in Hollywood. Grant can pay his mortgage.

Only, Grant Shepard is the last person that Helen wanted to see again. She's never forgiven him for what happened thirteen years ago. So no one is more surprised than her when sparks begin to fly between them in the writers' room.

Their history is messy. Their attraction is inescapable. And soon, they're both in too deep . . .

This wasn't meant to be a love story.

But aren't the best endings the ones you never saw coming?

Too many sex scenes

The story was completely undermined by the, at times, long and descriptive sex scenes. It felt unnecessary and the book was the poorer for it.

Loved this story- no surprises but a great and emotional tale

Loved the book and wanted to find out what happened with Helen and Grant. Complicated and emotional - it was a grand tale. Enjoyed the performance too.

A rollercoaster of emotions, I was invested from the start. Narrators made it even better.

Unexpected Depth

I started this book with mixed feelings because of some misleading spoilers I saw beforehand, which kind of set me up for caution and dread. Honestly, it was unnecessary because the story turned out to be fantastic—full of angst and with some exceptionally well-crafted spicy scenes that felt intimate and natural, not forced at all. Both characters were very relatable, especially Helen with her depiction of social anxiety. It also dealt with some tough topics like suicide which added depth to the story. I really wish I had gone into it with no expectations at all.

Not bad, but could be better

I'm in two minds about this (audio)book. I enjoyed it, however some parts were rushed and random, like the way the main characters started getting along quite suddenly and got together.

Not a bad book, but not my favourite love story by a long stretch.

Not for me

I thought the plot to this was too evident from the start. I wouldn’t be rushing out to read another by this author. Such a pity as a different plot path would have been far less predictable and maybe more enjoyable.
