About this listen

At a time when political, environmental and social gloom can seem overpowering, this remarkable book offers a lucid, affirmative and well-argued case for hope. This exquisite work traces a history of activism and social change over the past five decades - from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the worldwide marches against the war in Iraq.

Hope in the Dark is a paean to optimism in the uncertainty of the 21st century. Tracing the footsteps of the last century's thinkers - including Woolf, Gandhi, Borges, Benjamin and Havel - Solnit conjures a timeless vision of cause and effect that will light our way through the dark and lead us to profound and effective political engagement.

Inspiring

So moving & inspiring, I was nearly brought to tears several times – definitely read this if you are feeling despair at the state of the world, it will help you feel more motivated and hopeful.

Wonderful book but robot like narration

A concise, thoughtful book let down by the narrator’s robot-like voice. The reading lacked any conviction whatsoever - a real shame considering how passionately Solnit writes about rousing, inspirational topics. The narrator barely knew how to pronounce names of important places, people and historical moments which made it sound like she was just reading a script. That’s not to say the book itself isn’t wonderful though!

Dated, but good

This book currently floats in that uncomfortable space of recent, doesn’t-quite-feel-distant-enough history. This makes the content a bit harder to connect with, but there are good messages in there. I personally found the way it was read, the smooth, slightly all knowing voice, incredibly annoying.

Good book, bad narration

Good book in need of an update. Narrator mispronounces stuff every couple of minutes throughout

A must listen/ read for all who need hope in dark times

With the authority hard-earned through years of a variety of forms of activism, Solnit gives a warm embrace to all contemplating hope and despair in the face of existential and wicked issues.
The stories told are diverse and incredibly interesting. Her perspectives and updated content is succinct and crisp. Her unwaivering message about what hope is (and is not) is a boost and a challenge for anyone who engages with the content.

struggled to follow the story

I found the author narrated the story to fast hardly anytime to capture what she says before moving to the next point. maybe reading the book will be better than the audio version

The worst narration I have ever heard.

Unbelievably robotic narration. I slowed it down but it was still unbearable..in fact was this a robot? Never got into what should be a good book.
