Summary

September 1804: England stands alone against France and the fleets of Spain, anticipating invasion. Vice-admiral Richard Bolitho has his own troubles to settle at home too. But his time on land is broken by an urgent summons from the King. Once more Bolitho hoists his flag above the veteran 74-gun ship Hyperion and sets sail - this time with a new squadron headed for the Caribbean. Ordered to plan and effect a daring raid on the Spanish Main, Bolitho spares himself nothing - from there to Antigua, where he rediscovers a passion that defies every convention and threatens his reputation. And the future of the Hyperion is at risk too. Set to clear the path to victory, there is a constant fear that this may be her final battle.

Taking the ******

Story as good as ever but totally spoilt by ridiculous and continual mispronunciation of Bolitho. Very much enjoying the series but if it continues then I shall regretfully pull the plug and ditch it!

Bit of a change

Good story but a bit disconcerting to hear the main character name pronounced differently from all the other books. Didn't Sound anything like David Jayston reading it yet at the end it did say he was reading it?

Why?!

A good performance from Jayston usual. Incredibly happy to note that “grimace” is now pronounced “grim-ass” as opposed to “grim-ace”, which has been winding me up. But why, oh why, 19 books in has the pronunciation of “Bolitho” changed from “Bol-eye-though” to “Bol-ee-though”. At the direction of the author perhaps, but seems odd so far in. It’s very grating.

Frustration

Why oh why after 18 books in the series does Michael Jayson change the way he pronounces “Bolitho”

Bolitho

Why change the pronunciation of Bolitho after all these books?
It’s a Cornish name and normally pronounced Bol-eye-tho as in the previous books.

Bol-eye-tho becomes Bol-ee-tho

Why oh why change the pronunciation of the main character's name this far in? I thought I might get used to it, but it was still as jarring at the end of the audiobook as at its beginning.

As everyone else!

I believe that this was the first book in the series that Jayston narrated, that is why Bolitho has suddenly become Boleetho. As it was the first one he’s done- he didn’t know any better! After all, Kent (Reeman) did not write these books in order.
There are other indicators, the way the characters voices and accent had changed, the mispronunciation of certain nautical terms etc.
Jayston was the consummate professional. He wouldn’t have got this so totally wrong after 19 books. But, please, enjoy the story and blank out the Boleetho!
