Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, narrated by Dominic Hoffman.

Effia and Esi: two sisters with two very different destinies. One sold into slavery, one a slave trader's wife. The consequences of their fate reverberate through the generations that follow.

Taking us from the Gold Coast of Africa to the cotton-picking plantations of Mississippi, from the missionary schools of Ghana to the dive bars of Harlem, spanning three continents and seven generations, Yaa Gyasi has written a miraculous novel - the intimate, gripping story of a brilliantly vivid cast of characters and, through their lives, the very story of America itself. Epic in its canvas and intimate in its portraits, Homegoing is a searing and profound debut from a masterly new writer.

One of the best book I have ever read

Would you listen to Homegoing again? Why?

Yes. It was a fantastic , well thought out and well narrated novel. I felt like I was being read a history lesson on many levels containing both personal and national events. So well written and narrated. A fantastic well executed idea. Made me want to research my history further and take my children to Ghana.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Homegoing?

Without spoiling the book I thought the ending was perfect. Not expected but the only way it could have ended.

Have you listened to any of Dominic Hoffman’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No. First but thought he was brilliant and handled most accents with ease.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes. The book made me smile and cry.

Any additional comments?

I'm sure this book will become a classic and can't wait for more from the author.

Deeply Moving

Listening to this book was a painfully beautiful experience. I felt the weight of the pain and the pleasure that every character felt. Being African is an intrinsic reality for me and so, l listened with bated breathe, thinking that this story is palpable and mine.

Yaa Gyasi has written a true story of one strand that explains a huge part of why African-Americans see themselves they way they do. It's a brave attempt and it brought a gamut of emotions in me.

The narrator was superb. His slow and deliberate narration.added to the authenticity of the story. His change in accents could have been better, however, l am pleased with it. Homegoing is a deeply moving volume.

I aim to visit Ghana and tour the places mentioned in this book.

Outstanding debut and moving history

What a fantastic book; recommended to me a few years after I'd visited Ghana and was still haunted by Cape Coast Castle, where slaves were kept in dungeons in the belly of a busy castle community which included a church. This novel travels across generations and carries the story of those that were stolen and sold, from their old homes to new and back again. I can't recommended this highly enough

Definitely worth listening to

Enjoyed the story it opened my eyes... It was hard to remember all the characters and who was who, whilst listening. With a book you can flick back to see. The narrators voice was a bit monotonous at times.

Loved it.

Fantastic read. I was a bit worried I would struggle to keep track over the difference generations and characters but this was not the case. It was a great listen.

I cannot rate this book highly enough.

An absolutely gorgeous tale which unblinkingly addresses the ugliness of colonialism, the slave trade, and basic garden variety racism without passing judgment or inciting hate. This is not a book to be rushed, but one to be savoured for its glorious prose and brilliant imagery. Dominic Hoffman is a master of accents, and his voice is simply perfect for the hypnotic rhythm of this epic novel! Simply and thoroughly flawless. Well done, Ms. Gyasi!

Educational and interesting

I learnt a lot from this book and Yaa Gyasi's research is impressive. It could have been a little shorter and would have made the same impact.

Edifying with superb story telling

I wanted to stop listening because it was hard to read this fictional novel, which conversely contained so much truth. There is no point reiterating the story as it has been done. Like almost everyone before me I found it's depth of sadness and suffering palpable. it constantly amazed me at the strength of so many to keep living, to pull through no matter what. There were moments of light, love and beauty and I felt I was there, sometimes scared, sad and happy. A brilliant novel and superbly read by Dominic Hoffman with his perfect diction, a perfect duo.
