About this listen

From award-winning author Kate Morton, read by powerhouse Emmy award–winning actress Claire Foy. This breathtaking mystery of love, lies and a cold case come back to life is told with Morton's trademark intricacy and beauty.

Adelaide Hills, Christmas Eve, 1959. At the end of a scorching hot day, beside a creek in the grounds of a grand and mysterious house, a local deliveryman makes a terrible discovery. A police investigation is called, and the small town of Tambilla becomes embroiled in one of the most shocking and perplexing murder cases in the history of South Australia.

Many years later and thousands of miles away, Jess is a journalist in search of a story. Having lived and worked in London for nearly two decades, she now finds herself laid off from her full-time job and struggling to make ends meet. Until a phone call out of nowhere summons her back to Sydney, where her beloved grandmother, Nora, has suffered a fall and been raced to the hospital. At Nora’s house, Jess discovers a true crime book that chronicles the police investigation into a long-buried event: the Turner Family Tragedy of Christmas Eve, 1959. It is only when Jess skims through the pages that she finds a shocking connection between her own family and this once-infamous scandal – a murder mystery that has never been resolved satisfactorily.

What a delight

I so enjoyed this wonderful story. I know it’s not uncommon for reviewers to say they hated it when a good book ended, but this was so true for me with this book. The characters were so diverse and fascinating; the storyline complex and ever turning; the descriptions of the country beautiful - excellent all the way through for me, and I really do plan to read this book again in the not too distant future. Thank you to both Kate Morton and Clare Foy for many hours of sheer enjoyment.

The characters and the setting which feels like a character in itself.

I loved the storytelling. It never felt clunky or manipulative in how it eked out details. I fell in love with the characters as the author drew them with such detail and nuance. Halcyon felt tangible, I could almost feel the dewy grass between my toes as I walked the grounds in the morning like Isabelle. I didn’t predict the ending and it felt well constructed and not forced to the will of the story. It was believable because the characters had been so well drawn and it was fitting. I will now immediately read the House at Riverton as I have loved being in Kate Morton’s world. I want more.

The epic story across generations

I loved this book. The early story and current day were both captivating and merged seamlessly without confusing the reader.
The only thing that I realised towards the end was that there was not one man, in the lives of any of the three current-day female characters. I assume that was intentional but jarred by the end of the book.
This would make a brilliant epic serial - I look forward to seeing it.

Great story not so good narration

I loved the story and I love Claire Foy as an actress but I found her narration incredibly flat and had to keep stopping listening because it grated so much. The better the story is the more frustrating when it’s badly narrated
