About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before.

The audiobook of Hogfather is narrated by the BAFTA award-winning actor Sian Clifford (Fleabag, Vanity Fair, Quiz). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

Twas the night before Hogswatch and all through the house...something was missing.

The stockings are hanging ready, the sherry and pies are waiting by the fireplace - but where is the jolly fat man with his sack? It's not right to find Death creeping down chimneys and trying to say 'Ho ho ho' - but someone's got to bring the little kiddies their presents. Or else they might stop believing. Belief is important in Discworld, particularly on the last night of the year when the time is turning. If the real man in the red suit isn't found by morning, there won't be a morning. Ever again...

A festive feast of darkness, jolly robins and tinsel. As they say: 'You'd better watch out...'

Hogfather is the fourth book in the Death series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order.

The first book in the Discworld series - The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

revisiting Terry Pratchett

Starting to re-listen to stories read a decade ago. A good story but a bit long and some parts I had forgotten not so nice and went on too long with the villains. I thought Sian was a good reader, but the interludes with Bill Nighy made no sense. I would have preferred just Sian. Bill is normally so good but just didn't work here.

Excellent narration

Loved the narration. The usual inventive and sharply observed from TP. The ones with Death are my favourite!

Fabulous adaptation with audio niggles

Fantastic narration, great audio adaptation of an amazing story by a wonderful, much missed author. #GNUTerryPratchett

My gripes are audio related - inconsistent volume, and sadly Bill Nighys footnote readings are especially quiet, requiring pausing, going back and upping the volume.

Highly recommend.

A superb version of a much beloved book, Sian Clifford's range as most of the characters made this for me, truly impressive & enjoyable.(Much as I like Nigel Planer, his version was a disapointment). Cannot recommend enough.

Brilliant

I watched the sky one series of discworld specials a few years ago. Been planning on reading/listening to them for a while. Glad to finally find an unabridged version.

Very well performed.

A favourite story

Peter Serafinowicz is perfect as death in all these new readings. I feel like Bill Nighy is phoning it in, somewhat. He seems not to care very much about what he's reading. Sian Clifford does a decent job, but I feel she may have overstretched herself a bit on the character voices, which become rather annoying after a short while.

On the whole though, well worth the credit

Brilliantly funny

The fourth in the Death Series and the 20th novel for me, I'm finding it hard to pick a favourite but this is definitely one of my top three.
I love the way Death tries so hard, too hard really, to understand Humanity.
***spoiler***
I don't want to spoil anyone's experience, but there's a little bit towards the end where whilst Susan is facing own Death, Death says "I AM THE LAST RESORT".
His protective nature over Susan is beautiful. And what he does for Albert... well....
Peter Serafinowicz as the voice of Death has been wonderful throughout the books. I don't know how he does it but he does it terrifically well, with Bill Nighy adding the footnotes.

There's a little bit of everyone in thks book. you have Nobby and Colon, the Wizards (Ridcully, The bursar, The Dean, The Wrangler Ponder Stibbons etc) , The librarian, Hex, Susan, Albert, The Auditors, Violet the Tooth Fairy The Assassin's Guild, The Death of Rats & Death of course with new characters dropping in (literally) such as the God of Hangovers, The Cheerful Fairy and The Verruca Fairy.
There are lots of things happening in thks book. one of my favourite bits is where Nobby was told to take charge of Death and ended up sitting on his knee in a department store telling him what he'd like for Christmas.
For performance I've awarded 4 out of 5. There was just one thing that I didn't like Sian Clifford, when she does Ridcully's voice, really shouts the part. I read and listen to the books
I found myself pausing Ridcully as her voice got far too loud. Ridcully is a know all, without knowing very much and he loves to interfere in progressing. it's his way or no way. it's just when Sian does his voice it's on one very big shout.
Audible does irk me in some ways. Most of the Discworld are so well performed, I don't mind them not being the originals. Indira Vama as Granny Weatherwax, Nanny etc is brilliant. I'm not a Jon Culshaw fan, never have been, and will avoid books narrated by him when Nigel Planer did a much better job.
The originals were recorded by Isis
with Planer narrating. they were really really good. you have to really scour the internet to find them..The new books are Penguin. The originals were much longer. for example The Last Continent, read by Tony Robinson is only 3 hours long. the original is just over 9 hours.
I question how you can skip 6 hours of a book and tell the whole tale.
in the future is like to see listeners have a choice of narrator. if it ain't broke don't fix it.

character development

Enjoyed revisiting the Disc world characters. They were well voiced and it made a pleasing mid December listen.

Hearing Death Say HoHoHo Never Gets Old

A fun story with some interesting takes on the fantasy scene for belief...but hearing Death say HoHoHo in so many different ways made me smile everytime.
