About this listen
A much loved science-fiction classic, this entertaining intergalactic adventure has a lot going for it - including narration by British comedian Stephen Fry. Adams displays his talents for a creating a whole new world in this first of five audiobooks in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Packed with brilliant humour, extraordinary characters and a highly original storyline, it's no wonder that this novel is a favourite of so many.
One Thursday lunchtime the Earth gets unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. For Arthur Dent, who has only just had his house demolished that morning, this seems already to be more than he can cope with. Sadly, however, the weekend has only just begun, and the Galaxy is a very strange and startling place.

Critic reviews
'One of the greatest achievements in comedy. A work of staggering genius' - David Walliams
'By turns authoritative as the narrator, bemused as Arthur Dent, deadpan as Ford Prefect and manic as Zaphod Beeblebrox, he [Stephen Fry] makes an altogether appropriate reader' - The Times
'Master of comedy Stephen Fry delivers a brilliant audiobook narration' - Editor Review
'He had almost a Wodehousian style and some of his phrases and jokes entered our language. He changed the way people spoke' - Stephen Fry

Trip down memory lane
What did you like most about Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?
It was a revisit of a book I had read about 30/40 years ago
What was one of the most memorable moments of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?
The boarding of the Vogon ship
Have you listened to any of Stephen Fry’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Yes, especially his own autobiographies
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
It's not really a book that shifts you emotionally, but just takes you on a jolly ride
Any additional comments?
The only real disappointment was how familiar it all was. I guess I'd hoped I'd have forgotten most of it but I hadn't and, so it wasn't knew. Rather it was a trip down memory lane.

A well read classic
This fantastically witty and off-beat story may be familiar to many due to its various tv and film incarnations. The unique characters and plot are brilliantly read by Stephen Fry and this allows the listener to indulge in an unusually involved experience, not unlike that of an old-school radio play. I thoroughly recommend this title and will admit that I have previously struggled with Adams' work, though in this form it worked beautifully.

Excellent
Perfect story and an excellent narrator.. What to add... Stephen Fry´s reading, his interpretation of single characters was just marvelous. I hope the other books will reach the same high standard S. Fry has set..
