About this listen
Sunny afternoons are the worst for a recovering alcoholic. But I’m doing OK and I’m proud of myself. I stretch out on my sun lounger with my book, basking in the peace before I have to collect my son from school. Then the gate rattles. It’s the police and judging by their expressions, they’re not here with good news.
As I face the two officers, I try to dismiss what they’re telling me. My husband, Rob, can’t possibly be dead—I only saw him this morning. Besides, he’s the safest cyclist I know and would never put himself at risk.
I don’t tell them that we rowed this morning. Besides, it’s not even relevant.
It breaks my heart that our last words were angry ones, and now, I’ve not only got to identify his body, but I’ve also got to break the news to our son. I’ve never felt so alone in my life and don’t know if I can resist the urge to find some comfort in a bottle of brandy. Especially when the police reveal that Rob’s death wasn’t an accident—that he’s been the victim of a hit and run.
And it seems I’m the prime suspect.
I’ve already lost my husband, now it seems I could also lose my son, my home and even my freedom. Every piece of my life is slipping away as the evidence mounts against the person with the most apparent motive – me.
And I have no alibi.
But others wished Rob harm, those whose motives are only coming to light now he’s gone. He’s taken so many secrets and lies to his grave that I barely know which one of them to begin with.
As the dark days that follow threaten to push me to the edge, I learn more about my husband after his death than I ever knew when he was alive.
And it’s too late to confront him.

Fantastic book by Maria Frankland
Well Maria Frankland has done it again another amazing book.
I couldn’t put it down and have read it within a couple of days. Would recommend this book to anybody who likes thrillers with twists and turns and an ending I would not have been able to guess.

Hit
Alexandra Hurworth, narration takes you to Yorkshire.
A great British thriller. Recovering alcoholic, secrets, family problems, embezzlement.
The twist and turns, the death of Fiona's husband by a hit and run driver, sets this great thriller in motion.
A rollecoaster.

Kept me guessing
I very rarely read psychological thrillers unless I have had them recommended to me - and this was one that I’m delighted I followed up on. The setting of the story is around Otley and Ilkley near Leeds … areas of Yorkshire that I am very familiar with. I didn’t suspect the actual killer at any time throughout the book. I liked how the husband’s ‘other’ life was slowly revealed and with it the various potential individuals who might have a good reason to kill him. I felt Fiona’s frustration and desperation was evident throughout by the clever narration. I did, however, questioned some of Fiona’s actions. I changed my mind several times as to who I felt the actual killer was … so I do have to give the author credit for keeping me guessing. My reason for 4 * rather than 5* is that I felt it was a little drawn out in the middle.
Otherwise, a very good listen, well narrated and I would recommend it. I’ll certainly be looking at other books by this author.

Hit and run
This audiobook really had me hooked. The story line had lots of twists and turns which kept me hooked.
I wasn't sure about the narrator to start with but I stuck with it and I'm so glad I did.
I'll definitely me listening to more from Maria as the ones I've had the pleasure of listening to so far have been fantastic.

Nearly Excellent!
This is a really good, compelling story, with well drawn characters and a great ending. It could have been excellent if only it hadn’t been written a bit like a year 11 essay in its use of language, insofar as, people don’t use such precise language in every day speech! That combined with the rather wooden style of the narrator (who did a good job otherwise) was distracting at times.

Delivers again
I do enjoy a Maria Frankland book, I have discovered I enjoy them better through audio books, as the narration just adds something to the story - especially the accents this time.
I was not able to work out the culprit until about 90% in but still didn't know why. I like that in a book/story.
I was given an advance copy by the author but this in no way influenced my decision.
