About this listen

Elissande Edgerton is a desperate woman, a virtual prisoner in the home of her tyrannical uncle. Only through marriage can she claim the freedom she craves. But how to catch the perfect man?

Lord Vere is used to baiting irresistible traps. As a secret agent for the government, he's tracked down some of the most devious criminals in London, all the while maintaining his cover as one of society's most harmless - and idiotic - bachelors. But nothing can prepare him for the scandal of being ensnared by Elissande. Forced into a marriage of convenience, Elissande and Vere are each about to discover that they're not the only ones with a hidden agenda. With seduction their only weapon - and a dark secret from the past endangering both their lives - can they learn to trust each other even as they surrender to a passion that won't be denied?

Fantastic story, fantastic narration

I love Sherry Thomas' writing, but even when set against so many wonderful books, this is one of her best.

Kate Reading's narration is simply flawless.

A real treat for fans of historical romance in audio.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

One to equal Lord of Scoundrels. Great story. Great author. Great reader.

Any additional comments?

more historical romances by this author - but please keep Kate Reading as reader

Just great

Loved it, was so ridiculous in some places I couldn't help snort laughing. I liked the way every sentence mattered to the story. I had to rewind soo many times because if I couldn't follow the story if I missed even a few sentences.

Almost gave up on this story...

.... so glad I didnt. Kate Reading is a joy and held me in spite of my irritation at times, with one of the characters. As the story with all its twists and turns progressed I felt engaged with the same character and found parts of the tale so laugh out loud funny. Soulful and romantic, satisfying and unusual. I loved it and couldnt stop listening.

Unexpectedly Delightful

So well narrated with perfect diction and comprehension of the genre to emphasize the humour and horror of the situation. The title doesn't represent the clever and twisting plot, sounding more trite for what is one of the best books I've ever had in this genre. The descriptions of art, art movements sculpture and etiquette show just how much research went into it this delightful dalliance. The Squeak Piggy Squeak chapter is by far one of the best !

A true farce in the English tradition, but deeply moving and satisfying. I started the book expecting the usual poorly written nonsense only to become engrossed in a lovely love story.

Thank you Audible for a freebee.

DELIGHTFUL FUN

DNF

Couldn't finish it as the heroine in this book is absolutely vile! In any other book, she'd be the villain, but in this one we're supposed to excuse it, because.... reasons?!?🤦‍♀️

She's manipulative, arrogant, dismissive, a schemer, plays the victim to get what she wants, feels trapped by her uncle, so she decides that trapping a stranger into marriage is the best solution, when she has no idea if the stranger is worse than her uncle. Make it make sense!

No man in that era... not even Prinny himself could've kept a husband from his wife, so lord only knows what she's hoping to accomplish 🤷‍♀️

Also her expecting the man she entrapped to be not only happy about it, but that he'll do her bidding... again, because... reasons?!?

I might've excused it somewhat if she'd remained focused on de Vere, but the fact that she switched to Freddie & then went full succubus on de Vere, just sealed her as repulsive IMO...

It made absolutely NO sense that he'd know what she had planned, but still allows himself to be trapped! Go back into the uncle's study & lock the door, ninnyhammer!

This is the 2nd book that I've read
where an author has foolishly believed that a human being is able to play a character & stay in character 24/7 for decades... fooling all their friends, family, loved ones for eons... there's absolutely no way... the mask ALWAYS drops eventually!

Why did my audiobook skip?

What would have made His at Night better?

It would have improved matters a little if it didn't skip so much although I have to admit the story was quite ridiculous. I simply cannot believe that the main character managed dupe his friends, family, staff etc. for so long. Also author didn't make it clear when the accident happened - the whole business surrounding his accident and when he made his choice to act like an idiot around his family was unclear.

What was most disappointing about Sherry Thomas’s story?

The storyline also the unsympathetic hero and the romance in general was a bit of a bore.

Have you listened to any of Kate Reading’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes. Kate always does well.

What character would you cut from His at Night?

would like a better hero. Also could have done without the secondary romance between hero's brother and his childhood friend
