About this listen
Playing a mystery game seems the perfect way to celebrate Jamie Kydd’s promotion to detective sergeant rank. But the game turns real when a body turns up in the pretend crime scene. Perhaps worse than spoiling the party, the corpse is someone Jamie knows.
Even though the police take on the case, Jamie asks his friend, former police detective Michael McLaren, to also investigate—concerned that the victim’s criminal past may dampen the Constabulary’s usual fervor to nab his killer. It seems to have been a smart decision, for the police aren’t expending a lot of energy on the inquiry.
Suspects float around McLaren…half truthful, hard to find. More like wraiths than flesh and blood. If the victim’s burglary partner, ex-wife, or childhood friend didn’t kill Dan, who did? It’s a desperate game between McLaren and a killer who’s playing hide and seek.

Great series well narrated
This is fast becoming one of my favourite listens as both well written and narrated. I am listening to these out of order but it doesn't really matter that much and I can pick it up easily. The different strands work well and come to a great conclusion.
I did struggle with one of the voices a little as it sounded strange but in the scheme of things not a big deal.

Clever writing
The more I listen to Jo Hiestands books about Mike McLaren, the more I cannot decide whom I like more.
The author cleverly weaves her stories with relatable and likeable characters, Mike is a mam with a strong morale compass that drives him to solve murders and give answers to the loved ones left behind, and then Calum Hale depicts Mike in the absolute best way, strong personality with empathy and drive that comes across well in his narration.
To celebrate Mike's friend Jamie's promotion, Paula, Jamie's wife arranges a party with a murder mystery plot to solve, but Mike's relaxed party evening is soon halted when a real victim is found alongside the manikins

Another Excellent listen
Another excellent listen in this very good series. After a murder game that ended up with a real corpse this is an intriguing plot with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. I was unsure about this series after listening to a later book but now I can't get enough. Callum Hales narration is excellent and brings everyone to life. Highly recommended.
I was kindly given a copy of the book by the narrator and leave this honest review.

An Intriguing Whodunit with a Dark Twist!
Hide and Seek
By Jo A. Hiestand
Narrated by Callum Hale
I received a complimentary copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Hide and Seek by Jo A. Hiestand, brought to life by Callum Hale’s stellar narration, is a masterful addition to The McLaren Mysteries series. What starts as an innocent evening of mystery gaming among friends quickly takes a chilling turn when an actual murder disrupts the fictional intrigue. Suddenly, a harmless “whodunnit” game turns into a very real and dangerous investigation.
When the local police seem unhurried in their response, Jamie Kydd turns to his friend Michael McLaren, a former detective, to uncover the truth. McLaren dives headfirst into the case, uncovering a web of secrets and lies that lead to a deadly game of cat and mouse. The twists are as sharp as McLaren’s wit, keeping listeners guessing until the very end.
Jo A. Hiestand’s storytelling is gripping and layered with suspense, and Callum Hale’s narration elevates the experience. His voice captures every character’s essence, from McLaren’s sharp intellect to the growing tension of the investigation. Hale’s pacing and tone pull you deeper into the world of intrigue, making it impossible to press pause.
Whether you’re a long-time fan of the series or a newcomer, Hide and Seek offers everything you’d want in a thrilling mystery. With a clever plot, complex characters, and a setting that feels rich and atmospheric, it’s a must-listen for mystery lovers.
Perfect for fans of intricate whodunits and expertly narrated audiobooks.
