About this listen
Thursday the 18th, June 1992, was a day like no other. Its events would change his life in more ways than one, and the consequences will return more than once to haunt his life and career....
DCI Seth Hannen had worked hard for his pension, doing his best to run from his past whilst giving loyal service in the Thames Valley and Metropolitan Police forces. He sold his soul to his career, wrecking two marriages and becoming estranged from his only son. It’s time he took it easy with his new love. But she comes with some secret baggage that makes retirement anything but relaxing, especially when the ghosts of skeletons in Seth’s closet return to plague him yet again. One man keeps cropping up as Seth faces his demons and tries to come to terms with his past while also trying to face the future. Seth is drawn into a new dark world of law keeping, one that will test him to the core.

More Rivett needed
Simon,
Just my cup of tea and a great twist at the end.
Great pace with strong characters wrapped a cracking intertwined plot.
Hidden by the Law shines a light on modern day policing reassuring the reader that despite operational cuts and rogue police officers the force is still an effective crime fighting operation.
This is a classic cops and robbers story based on a deep understanding of the criminal mind and modern day UK policing.
The 30 year story arc is enhanced by Simon’s use of nature over nurture as a psychological construct that gives the reader credible buy to the primary characters.
The 2nd book is a necessity.
If I could offer a small build it’s … more Rivett required.😎

Crime thriller with plenty of surprises
The narrator can make or break an audio book but this one told the story well and brought the characters to life and had great enunciation.
The story itself is interesting. The pace of progression of the timeline of the main character seemed quick for the first half of the book and I did wonder how this could be the first in a series, however it all then became crystal clear and am excited to see what now lies next for Seth. Plenty of twists and turns and often ended up listening longer than I had planned just to see what happened in the next chapter.
For those familiar with policing or even Berkshire this also adds a nice additional layer of understanding to the book although this knowledge isn’t necessary to enjoy the story in full, which I would encourage others to do. I look forward to book 2.

Tolerable time passer for long journeys but…
Really irritating posh people as the good guys, far more interesting cockney types as the bad guys. Dialogue too polite and upper crust to be believable. Too much back story for all the main characters keeps bringing the narrative to a stop. Plus we never find out what Seth has done to justify him being promoted to DCI and headhunted by the Home Office. He just doesn’t come across as cutting edge material. I was rooting for Larry the bad guy all the way 🙂
