About this listen

Pregnant and secretly married, Cheryl Anway scribbles what becomes her last will and testament on a school binder shortly before a rampaging trio of misfit classmates gun her down in a high school cafeteria. Overrun with paranoia, teenage angst, and religious zeal in the massacre's wake, this sleepy suburban neighborhood declares its saints, brands its demons, and moves on.

But, for a handful of people still reeling from that horrific day, life remains permanently derailed. Four dramatically different characters tell their stories: Cheryl, who calmly narrates her own death; Jason, the boy no one knew was her husband, still marooned ten years later by his loss; Heather, the woman trying to love the shattered Jason; and Jason's father, Reg, whose rigid religiosity has separated him from nearly everyone he loves.

Excellent

I love Douglas Coupland and have for many years it is fantastic to have more of his books on here. He captures the essence of people so completely and having the books read to me just adds to the experience. This story reels you in and doesn’t disappoint, but don’t expect any nice neat happy endings here just like real life, it’s messy and that’s its beauty.

Genius

This is my favourite Douglas Coupland novel, brilliantly read by 4 very talented actors. Like most Coupland books this one deals with feelings of isolation in the midst of the buzziness of modern life. It starts with a high school shooting, very sensetively handled, and shows how the tradegic events cause ripples in the lives of two of the families concerned over a period of 20 years. As is common with a Coupland novel, the events and characters are a means to ask some very searching questions about faith, God and the value of individuals. This is a moving and thought provoking work but one that maintains the authors characteristic wit and warmth throughout. One of the best books availible on Audible.

Not a bad book.

This was a good book and I liked the plot and the twist of having one of the characters narrating there own death. Despite this however there were a few things I found difficult about this novel which is why I gave it a 4 star rating.

1. I could not connect with the characters, I found myself not really liking any of the characters even Sherral, i found them all really boring and quite dry.

2. Conciddoring this was a short book just over six hours long in Audio I found the book really slow to get into. Sherral's story was really long and while I accept background was needed I would have liked it to get into the shooting part quicker so we could really explore how the victims were coping.

What made me give this a higher rating of 4 was the four narators for the audio, they all arated there parts really well and brought the story to life. Overall an ok book but I don't think it's one that is going to stay with me. I may not have finished the book if i'd not been reading it for a book club given the slow pace of it considering it was so short book.
