About this listen

Asa Mulvaney is half of a psychopathic whole. He and his twin brother live together, party together…kill together. In the Mulvaney family, murder is the family business and business is good. So, when an experiment separates Asa and his brother, Asa is forced to navigate the world on his own for the first time in his life.

Zane Scott is a small-time crime blogger and amateur sleuth, but he dreams of a byline in a major paper someday. When he winds up at a boring fundraiser beside Asa Mulvaney, they share an intensely passionate encounter that leaves Zane with an ache in his chest and a story idea that could make his career dreams a reality.

At a nearby college, a cluster of suicides isn’t what it seems. When Asa’s father asks him to look into it, he sees the perfect opportunity to see his little crime reporter again. And Asa needs to see him again. Zane’s suspicious of Asa’s motives, but he won’t say no to a chance to peek behind the Mulvaney family curtains.

As the two unravel a sinister plot, Asa’s obsession with Zane grows and Zane finds being Asa’s sole focus outweighs almost anything, maybe even his career—which is good for Asa because loving a Mulvaney is a full-time job. Can he convince Zane that he’s worth navigating a family of psychopaths and his pathologically jealous twin, or will Zane learn the hard way that the Mulvaney boys always get what they want? Always.

Headcase is a high-heat, intense, lovers-to-frenemies, psychopath romance with an HEA and no cliff-hangers. It features an obsessive, calculating psychopath and a wannabe reporter who will stop at nothing to earn himself a major byline. As always, there’s gratuitous violence, very dark humor, enough killers to fill an auditorium, and enough heat to melt your audiobook player. This is book four in the Necessary Evils series. Each book follows a different couple.

Another winner in the Necessary Evils series!

Asa's book was as good as the previous ones and I can't wait for Avi's book to see how these twins will accommodate their significant others in their lives.

The downside was that we didn't get to see enough of the twins interacting, the story was focused on the couple. Since book 1 we have been reading about their connection and the prologue shows how strong that bond is, but we get more telling than showing, and I missed seeing it on-page.

Perfect narration!

Absolutely loved it

Yet another brilliant performance in this series. Avi has a much different personality than the other Mulvaney brothers and this really comes through. Another great story along with the relationship development between the two MCs and definitely on the relisten list.

pray vs predictor

this is about one of the twins. they've been separated to see how they'd react and unforuently or fortunately Asa replaced his brother with Zane which started a hot as hell romance add in a mystery that hit close to Zane and we have a great addition to the series. the audio just added to the overall enjoyment to the story

An intriguing romance & a dark, unsettling mystery

As addicted as I am to the Mulvaney family, what made this audio so powerful to me was Zane. The story of his brother's death and the twisted game that led to it took what was already an intriguing romance and turned it into an intensely satisfying, dark mystery. I loved every second of Asa and Zane's primal encounters, but I lived for the moments they spent tracking down clues and falling further and further down the rabbit hole of the Blue Whale challenge. Yes, the things they uncovered were horrific, sometimes devastating, but it only fueled my desire to see Zane and the Mulvaneys hunt down the monsters who set it up. More than ever, this audio convinced me that the Mulvaneys were dishing out karma to the worst of society, and honestly I'm a little scared of how viciously satisfied I was to see the bad guys suffer in the end.

Zane may have initially approached Asa as part of an undercover mission, but that quickly devolved into a hot as heck hookup that I was desperately hoping wouldn't end after one night. I didn't really expect the rest of the Mulvaneys to get involved so fast, but the larger their clan grows the more chaos they seem to attract. I was kinda expecting Zane and Asa to dance around each other for longer than they did, but before a full day had even passed all their cards were on the table. I was a bit nervous that their tenuous relationship would collapse before either man really gave it a chance, but having a shared purpose beyond sexual compatibility made everything slot into place. While I was a huge fan of the rough, claiming nature of their first nights together, Zane and Asa needed something more to link them together outside the bedroom (or staircase or floor or wherever else Asa took control). Working together on the investigation showed me all the little nuances of how Asa treated Zane differently than anyone else, and for a psychopath, that was a pretty strong indicator of how special he really was. Asa may not be able to feel love in the traditional sense, but the possessiveness he felt over Zane, the way he would literally kill for him, was just as satisfying to me. My only (mostly fake) complaint is that I didn't get a first hand account of all those wildly inventive, explosive-sounding roleplays they engaged in.

**I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

These two just fit together

I had read this book before so I’m including my original review. I feel lucky enough to be able to listen to this story. It’s been a little while since I read it and I remember how much I loved it. Now with the voice of someone else it sure gave me the sense of the layers of these guys and their stories. As I’ve listened to this story and have heard over and over again how these guys don’t naturally show emotion nor feelings it comes out how much they actually do. What is love if not the wanting to protect and make your partner happy. That is what comes out in all of this series. It really shows up in Asa as he again and again tries to do things for Zane that he feels Zane is unable to do. I so appreciate the chance to hear their story since Liam DiCosimo gives personality to these guys. It is also entertaining now each of these guys can dread a “talk” from their dad even when it does not come. I again had the problem with this as with the other stories in that I don’t want them to end. This author just has the ability to make the stories so good that I hate waiting for the next.
(previous review of the book)
I’m tempted to say this is the best of the series but I have loved each book and all the characters so it’s hard to pick the best. This story sure grabbed my attention from the start. Asa and Zane have an unusual start to a relationship. Asa kidnaps Zane and from there so many unpredictable events happen. This author has the ability to put together a story unlike any other and made me love psychopaths. Although each story states that the ability to love by the “brothers” as something they can’t do yet I’ve found in their own way they all display that deep affection. I laughed at the business call Asa had. I felt really sad for Zane and Gage’s relationship with their parents. I was surprised at Avi’s reaction to Zane. I have to say the one negative I have about this story is it leaves me melancholy. I don’t want the book to end.
