Summary

The final battle between the living and the dead begins...

Professor Abel Worthe has subjected the inhabitants of his village to unimaginable horrors. But the professor’s brutal experiment is finally coming to an end. And Worthe has saved his deadliest surprise for last.

Book seven - Christopher’s Blade: Within the walls of a rotting, old New England cottage, the ghost of a vicious serial killer named Christopher longs to taste the blood of a fresh victim. Marcus must battle this undead killer, as a new enemy gathers beyond the village gates.

Book eight - Silent Death: As Marcus and the others struggle to escape the village, they find themselves stalked by a demented soul who hears voices in her head urging her to kill. But this deadly specter isn’t the only foe they must face. The sadistic professor has set his eyes on one of the subjects, and Marcus must find a way to save him at all costs.

Book nine - Deranged Souls: Injured from his battles against the supernatural, Marcus confronts a ghost from his past, as another subject finds himself consumed by his growing paranormal abilities. The final battle draws near, and enemies and allies both converge on the village’s walls. Can Marcus finally beat the professor at his own sinister game?

Marcus must overcome crippling pain and fear and fight harder than he ever thought possible. But will courage be enough to defeat the enemies, and escape the professor’s sinister gauntlet? Or will the Subject B finally join the tortured souls that haunt Worthe’s village?

I promise I really did give it a fair chance!

I tried, I really did, but I just can't manage any more. I'll be returning this one if I can.
Main points:
Has this author ever actually met any people? I just can't imagine anyone who's ever met another person believing people really speak like these characters do.
All the characters are massive cliches.
The writing is clumsy beyond belief. No thought, action or story device is too small to be explained in excruciating detail in case the poor moronic 'reader' is too stupid to read between the lines and hold the basics of the story in their heads for more than a millisecond.
The narration (this has been my main problem with all the episodes I've listened to) got so much worse in this one! The accents are jaw droppingly terrible, the posh bloke from Leeds, UK is a particularly funny one. Sounds like he dropped straight out of the aristocracy. The French accents are hysterical - they change frequently (often mid sentence) and seem to touch on Chinese/Japanese/German and goodness knows what else. If it wasn't so annoying it'd be quite funny.
However, the thing that grates on me the most are the voices of the female characters. No matter the personality or temperament of the character they all sound the same - breathy, ineffectual and simpering. It's quite telling that the voices of the children are quite similar. Really, really irritating, especially when these whimpering, whispering, sappy voices are used for supposedly tough, capable and intelligent women. The writing doesn't help with the characterisation, but I wonder if the narration were better if that would help a little.
There's a lot more I could say, but I think the best thing is to give the first one a shot and you'll see for yourself.... you can always return it!
