About this listen

The best romantic comedy I've read since The Hating Game

Naomi and Luca have been pen-pals since fifth-grade. Well, more like bitter rivals caught in an epic battle of insults and verbal jousting…

But what starts as a hilarious chain of hate filled letters, slowly develops into a friendship spanning coasts and years. That is until one day, years later, when the letters suddenly stop.

It’s been two years since Naomi last heard from Luca. Two years since the letter that changed everything.

But when a new envelope turns up out of the blue at her desk at the local news station, Naomi is determined not to let Luca have the final word.

too cute a story

i liked this alot, the plot. the twist, all of it. only thing "bad" is that there is only one lady narrator, when the chapters seem to be clearly his and hers chapters. they should have had a man come in to do his parts. therefore the lower score on the performance. other than that, a delight

emotional

This book is amazing. It's so emotional and I'm not exactly an emotional person and I'm sobbing by the end and laughing at jokes. It really brings you into their lives and makes you feel like your there helping them figure everything out.

Cute

"Hate Mail" by Donna Marchetti delves into the evolving relationship between Naomi and Luca, who start off as childhood pen-pals engaged in a lively battle of wits and insults. This long-standing correspondence matures into a more complex friendship that spans years and emotional landscapes, offering a promising premise filled with humor and potential growth.

The narrative, largely driven by their letters, initially entertains with its clever exchanges and sharp banter. However, the plot encounters hurdles as it progresses. The storyline, while engaging at times, becomes somewhat lackluster as deeper emotional themes are introduced without sufficient development. Furthermore, Naomi is depicted with a circle of friends who fail to add the necessary depth to her personal journey, diminishing the story's impact.

Luca's character, in particular, would have benefitted greatly from additional depth and perspective. His actions, which tread into overly persistent territory, could have been better understood, or perhaps even sympathized with, had there been a dual narration that included his point of view. The use of a male narrator for Luca’s segments would have enriched the narrative, offering a balance and insight that the book sorely needs, especially when addressing the more serious undertones that emerge.

The revival of their communication after a mysterious two-year silence introduces a new dynamic, yet the resolution feels somewhat rushed and underexplored. Marchetti's narrative shines when it focuses on the cleverness of the exchanges but seems to struggle with the transition into more serious, emotional territory.

Overall, while "Hate Mail" offers moments of enjoyable literary banter and an intriguing premise, it falls short of its potential due to the one-sided narrative and lack of a compelling male voice for Luca. A dual POV approach with distinct narrators could have significantly elevated the depth and engagement of this epistolary novel.

Cute and light read

It had that typical Rom com feel to it as your reading/listening to the book. It was light and fun, and though it had that sense of mystery around it, and often did leave you on the edge it was definitely enjoyable to read. Witnessing Naomi’s journey as she goes through the story to try and figure out where Luca was, kept me wondering who it could be, though it’s very obvious who once the story gets past the first five chapters.
