About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

There's something bad in the water . . .

Lola Nox is the daughter of a celebrated horror filmmaker, and thinks she knows all about Harrow Lake, the setting of his most famous movie.

But when her father is brutally attacked and she's sent there to stay with her reclusive grandmother, she realizes the town is harbouring secrets more horrifying than she could ever have imagined. Not only is this the place where her mother disappeared without a trace, it's a town holding on to a dark past that's even more frightening than her father's movies. As Lola is drawn deeper into the town's grip, she starts to question what's real, what happened to her mother, and whether she'll ever get out of Harrow Lake alive.

Twisty psychological horror, absolutely brilliant performance by reader.

Harrow Lake follows the perspective of the daughter of a famous movie director when sent to the town her missing mother grew up in, and where her father made his most famous film.
We know Lola will be missing by the end of the book, how and why and what she will uncover in this dark creeping horror tale is yet to be discovered.
With themes of lost innocence, the dark side of small towns, family secrets, and mental health wound around a folklore legend of Mr Jitters who comes tap tapping in the night, it’s a thrilling atmospheric tale.
The audiobook reader does a truly fantastic performance with Lola’s story especially communicating her moods, fear and the tension both sensory description and the internal struggle within Lola, there were points where I genuinely had to turn it off when listening late at night as I was scared.
The two interview sections however are less convincing than the powerful main performance though.

Didn't live up to expectations

It's mid October so I thought it was time to start some spooky reading before Halloween. The synopsis of this sounded great, but unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. To begin with, I didn't realise it was a YA novel and the first two thirds of the bokk were incredibly slow and I felt my attention wandering as I listened. The pace of the last third picked up considerably and I enjoyed the ending, which did surprise me. However because if the slow start I can only award 2,5* rounded up.

I did enjoy the narration.

The word optimal is no longer optimal

aarrfgghh STOP with the word optimal!!! it was so irritating.

The storyline was good, not as atmospheric and scary as I had hoped for and instantly obvious if you have studied psychology (which I haven't!) what the story is actually about. The readers were excellent though and it was an interesting listen

bad book but good ending

to me the writing was so extremely over the top. I cringed at like every line. the story dragged on too much and it felt like everything just happened at the end. I dont know, probably one of the worst thrillers I've read. BUT the ending was honestly really good. one thing that wouldve bumped this up to 3 stars would be if the interview would be a bigger part of the book.
