Summary

Why are single mothers still portrayed as one-dimensional, hot messes? Why do holidays still somehow cost the same for single parents, as those traveling with partners? Why are we constantly told that children of single parents will be damaged for life?

In this myth-busting manifesto, Sarah Thompson shares her own experience of single motherhood, along with a range of case studies, and new research, to show you all the reasons why being a single parent is great, and should be celebrated.

With contributions from leading child psychologists, Sarah examines the positive impacts that being raised by a single parent can have on a child, including resilience, creativity, emotional intelligence, and independence.

She shares practical tips for dealing with the many financial challenges that single mothers face, and advice on how to navigate work when you’re parenting solo.

Carving out a new life as a single mother can be tough, but Sarah explains why you’re not automatically resigned to a life of misery, and how it can be empowering and rewarding, in ways you might never have imagined.

For every parent who has ever felt the weight of disappointment and guilt, declared themselves a failure, been ostracized or criticized for their single mother status, who has wondered where they went wrong, or why it happened to them, or who has worried about their children’s ‘outcomes’ – this audiobook is for you.

Incredible

Listening to this was like having the bestest kindest wisest friend you’ve ever had sit you down and really enlighten you. It instantly changed my thought process in such a positive way, it inspired me and made me feel so much better at a low point. It’s a real game changer. Thank you

Encouraging insightful read

Loved everything, the tips the different types of single mums and her personal sharing too, made me chuckle laugh and cry. Was almost like having a friend in my ear, with anecdotes, practical advice and sharings. The only part of the book that made me feel alienated was where she describes the role of grandmother's. it might have been good in addition to her celebrating their potential role to acknowledge that many single mums don't have the luxury of grandparents round the corner to help. apart from this, an amazing book!

I keep quoting bits from it!

I only listened to this book as it was recommended from @itsmehelenthorn

Overall the book was interesting and thought provoking. I have recommended it to single mum friends and I keep quoting bits from it (which I am sure is annoying!!!). It does highlight some of the equally when parents split but also helps to show there are some real positives being an 'independent mum'.

I do not agree with some of the views but it made me stop and think and I think that is what makes a great book.
