Summary

A cop, a pig, and a serial killer walk into a bar.

Seal Island is home to a moonshine making billionaire, a pot growing fisherman, a celebrity flower child, a handsome romance writer, a sex addicted realtor, a womanizing pub owner, a cop, a pot-bellied pig…and a serial killer.

The island is serene and remote. It is only accessible by boat. The residents like it that way, until those with the deepest and darkest of secrets start dying in the most bizarre of ways.

Upon discovering widow Eliza Bone floating bottoms-up in her Oscar fish tank, the one clue that the crime solving duo of Sergeant Betty Bruce and her pot-bellied pig, Gertrude, have is a set of muddy gumboot tracks left at the scene. Their problem: everyone on Seal Island wears gumboots. As two more people die and secrets begin to unravel, Betty and Gertrude soon find themselves in the cross-hairs of a serial killer.

In the end, only Gertrude may be left standing!

If you love funny murder mysteries, then Laura Hesse's Gumboot & Gumshoe Series is the perfect listen. Stay tuned for more adventures with Sgt Betty Bruce and Gertrude as they continue to solve crimes on the not-so-sleepy little Seal Island in The Dastardly Mr. Deeds.

mechanical sounding narration

struggled to finish the book because of the awful narration. Which Sounded like a computer generated voice with emphasis in the wrong places.

Small island murder

I enjoyed this mystery. This is the first book by this author that I have read or listened to but as I already have the next book it won't be my last. Although I thought it was going to be more humours and I did find it very slow I did like it. There was to many characters introduced to us at the beginning and I did struggle keeping them straight to start with but as the numbers quickly dropped it wasn't for long. There wasn't much investigation going on and it was more just the discovering of the next body, so I was surprised when the book ended and the murder was reviled, I didn't see that coming. I liked the characters who were varied and unusual, especially the four legged kind and the mischief they got into. I hope the next book has a lot more of that going on because Gertrude stole the show for me. The small town setting comes across nicely and the author used her words to paint a picture and feeling that you can believe. The mystery was interesting the way nobody was sure there was a murder or not and I loved the fact they looked like accidents. The story is told be multiple characters and this works well, as there is a lot going on in the story. Off to see what happens next.
Betty is looking for the quite life after a bad break up and thought the most drama she would have to investigate once returning home to the sleep Seal island, is the chaos caused by her pot-bellied pig Gertrude and her cow friend Peaches. That is until she discovers her friend dead partly submerged in her fish tank. Did her friend did have an accident? Everybody thinks so and so would Betty if it wasn't for the fact there was muddy foot prints on her neat freak friends floor. Did the killer leave behind a clue and if so who is it pointing at? Living on an island where gumboots is the norm instead of the strange she is not short of suspects that also includes her father and boyfriend. Then another body is found. Again asking the question was it an accident or murder? This time a connection is made, they were both writers and When a third body is discovered Betty has to ask could they be a serial killer killing of writers? And if so can she stop them before anybody else is killed?
I liked the narrator. She had a pleasant voice that she used well to give voice to each character.
