About this listen
Stella won't give up, but she doesn't know how to go on.
Stella North, a rising star in the police, has her life torn apart by a gunman's bullets. She has often faced danger, but these injuries mean she must give up the job she loves. Her grandmother Beth is her rock. And Beth is no ordinary woman. At 70, she runs marathons and has a past that Stella knows very little about.
Beth calls in her friend, Michael, to help with Stella's recovery. But this man means a lot more to Beth than she reveals. And Stella's ex-husband, Edward, and old police partner, Robbie, want to help, but Stella puts up emotional barriers, and they have problems of their own. Her old friends from her days of Urbex (exploring old abandoned buildings) offer a glimmer of hope for the future.

Another good story with great characters
Slightly different but with new characters and guest appearances from much loved names other novels, a good, fairly light story but oh, the narration! The accents were all over the place making the whole thing a chore to get through.

OK but disappointing narration
I enjoyed the Jackman and Evans books so looked forward to this back story, but was disappointed on several counts. The narration was annoying, like reading a story to a child with almost no pauses between character changes so sometimes confusing. The plot was a bit low key and too Mills and Boon for my taste, and the character of Beth the supergran was unlikely and too sugar sweet to be likeable. I was hoping for another police plot and this wasn't one.
In my opinion it was not a patch on the detective novels the author writes.

Did I listen to the same narration?
Decent enough plot and I like Ellis’s style but the narration is all over the place regards the accents and delivered in a deadpan monotone which distracts from the book. A shame.

Good story, narrator could be better
I enjoyed the story and getting the background of some of the characters, but I found the narrator a bit ‘sleepy’ in places.
There wasn’t a huge amount of difference between emotions, and she made the dialogue sound dull.
There were also times where the editing was a bit off and it felt like the chapters seemed to run into one another.
Overall, I enjoyed the story but it took longer to get through than I’d have liked because I had to keep stopping to wake myself up.

light Listen for anyone liking the DCI Jackman stories
Relatively enjoyable Story, interesting to get extra depth on Stella North character.
few cameo appearances from characters from the DCI Jackman books .
Sadly, the narration left a lot to be desired. When just reading text all was fine but this Narrator cannot do any accents, Marie's Welsh accent was closer to Calcutta than Cardiff and the Fen Accents were a hotchpotch of accents that were very fluid. As for the German accent.... well if you didn't know you were in Germany you would not have guessed at all.

A really good read
I was so delighted to find this book having read Joy’s Jackman and Evans series and the Nicky Galena books. I soon became thoroughly engrossed in the story and the lives of the characters, and although this book can be read as a stand alone story, I was delighted to encounter some familiar characters along the way. Joy has the great gift of being able to tell a story which is both engaging and atmospheric as it draws the reader in. I’m hoping to find some more gems like this one for my next read.

Bit low key compared to her usual plots
If you hadn’t listened to her Jackman and Evans series, I don’t think this would make sense. It was good and well written but too mundane for me overall. I was a little bored for a while. It got better and everything tied up well but not the high octane guessing game I like from this author.
