Joanna Daniel performs this collection of 25 of the greatest fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm. Translator Margaret Hunt is credited with bringing German folklore to the attention of English-speaking children, but in this audiobook, Joanna Daniel gets all the credit for a charming performance that adults will appreciate as much as their offspring. Tom Thumb, Snow White, Cinderella, and the Frog Prince all make appearances here, as well as some lesser-known characters like Dummling, Catherine and Frederick, and Mother Holle. All of them are both rendered delicately and enlivened by Daniel's winsome English accent.

Narration was great

Loved the narration and loved somev of the stories as some were familiar, but others were not as interesting. Suppose you can't win with every story.

There’s quite a lot of violence for a child’s book

To a sensitive child this may not the best listen- got as far as the first story and the horse having its head chopped off and nailed to a gate !
Not the stuff your six year old needs to hear before bed really is it ? Grimm indeed?

A sweet reminisce of stories from my childhood

This audiobook contains a collection of the Brothers Grimm’s extensive collection of stories which included Tom Thumb, Cinderella and Snow White.

While very sweet to listen and reminisce I found many of the tales sounded very alike and similar themes emerged within many of the stories. From listening using adult ears and knowledge I can hear that they are old fashioned with dated ideas; for example there is a clear masochism which runs through many stories. These are things I would not have picked up on as a child.

The narration of the book was good, Joanna Daniel sounded like various readers from Jackanory, with just the right amount of condensation and jolliness which will engage a child while not alienating.

Overall these are sweet bite size stories which are the right amount for children with limited attention spans.

Performance Issues

Couldn't get through it on several occasions. Less focus on the enunciation and more on dramtising the story please

Childhood Stories

I had a listen to this to make sure if suitable for young children. It was ok but did find a lot of the stories were very similar, perhaps the children would not notice it but quite entertaining none the less.

Grimm tails

a good retelling of the grimm tails, in there true grim format. completely bonkers and dark in places with some classic lines '7 at one blow' and "if I could but shudder"

Just not how I remembered them

Somehow I remained unengaged. Not sure if was just nostalgia that made me purchase or that I preferred the memories of these stories. Read well but by the middle of the second story, my mind wandered and I knew it was time to stop. Best to keep our memories perhaps!
