Summary

After an escaped prisoner bullies him into freeing him using stolen tools, seven-year-old orphan Pip is made to pay regular visits to the mysterious spinster Miss Havisham, who lives in the wedding dress she wore when jilted at the altar and keeps every clock in her crumbling mansion frozen at the same time. While there, he meets and instantly falls in love with her beautiful but aloof ward Estella.

Pip is rescued from a life as a blacksmith's apprentice by a mysterious benefactor who pays for him to have an education as a lawyer at a prestigious law firm in London. However, the temptations of the city are too much and he runs wild with his new-found friends.

Can Pip establish himself as a fine gentleman worthy of Estella's hand in marriage, before getting too far into debt? Who is his secret benefactor? Can Miss Havisham ever make peace with her tragic past?

This coming of age story is one of the most well-known books by Charles Dickens, set in Kent and London around 1812, it has a satisfyingly multi-layered plot and satirizes the social climbing and rigid class system of Dickens' time.

Evergreen

A classic story brought to life by the narrator. One of my all time favorite Dickens novel.
