About this listen

Claire and Sophie aren't your typical murder investigators . . .

Claire Hendricks is a hapless 30-something true-crime fan working as a freelance medium. When she is Invited to an old university friend's country pile to provide entertainment for a family party, her best friend Sophie tags along. In fact, Sophie rarely leaves Claire's side, because she's been haunting her ever since she was murdered at the age of 17.

When the pair arrive at The Cloisters it's clear this family is hiding more than just the good china, as Claire realizes someone has recently met an untimely end at the house. Teaming up with the least unbearable members of the Wellington-Forge family—depressive ex-cop Basher and teenage reactionary Alex—Claire and Sophie determine to figure out not just whodunnit, but who they killed, why and when…

“Read this fabulous book—you will not regret it!”—Ben Aaronovitch

food descriptions

I really enjoyed the story, set up and characters, however; the consistent fat shaming and pretty revolting descriptions of any meat based food was fairly off-putting.

Genuinely gripping and hilarious.

Picked this up being a fan of Alice Bell from Rock, Paper, Shotgun so perhaps a little bias but really enjoyed everything about this story. Definitely going to listen through again and see if any of the clues stand out like any good mystery story does and the tie-ins with Great Expectations are really well grounded. I really hope for more from Claire and Sophie in the future.

Engaging and entertaining

A delightful idea, a psychic haunted by a spirited friend (no pun intended) who died while they were in their teens, dropped into the traditional "big, mad family" to solve an interesting mystery. And the supporting cast were interesting in their own right. Good narration, with different and consistent voices for the characters.
Let's just say I'll be buying book 2 when I have a credit.

It’s ok

They, I kept thinking there was another person in the story I missed. Surely using the name of the person rather than they for a for an undecided sex person would help. Too confusing otherwise

Elle Owe Elle Loved Their Investigatoring!

I listened to this because of a podcast recommendation and I’m so glad I did
It was a laugh a minute investigation conducted by forgetful, sometimes drunk sometimes just dumb people who are just as good at ‘doing’ an organised investigation as you or I would be! Misinterpreting every important clue forgetting their actual ‘super abilities’ and not thinking to ask essential questions of those who might have seen something

Lighthearted new take on ghosts and crime solving

I loved the relationship between the two main characters, a 32 year old woman and her best friend who’s a ghost that died age 17.
Their friendship and relationships with other characters are fleshed out well.
Some of the language is what you’d expect to hear from a 17 year old that no one can hear but her best friend - so it’s a little more fruity than is usual in what is after all, a humorous cosy mystery!

Great fun, genuinely twisty mystery, delightfully awful ghosts

What a romp! The characters really feel like people, and their awfulness and funniness in equal measure make this a great read

Did it for me!

Not my usual genre, but boy am I pleased I branched out. Fun from start to finish, with wit and humour woven into a whodunit. Had me half believing in ghosts and that being dead was underrated. The narration is high quality and suited to the storyline. I hope that this is the start of a series - please?

Decent story

Story was okay, but the narration made it hard to follow who was talking at times as the different voices were very similar when the accents were the same
