Summary

Like all young men of a certain age, Harry Gilmour had his own notion of how a naval battle should be. This wasn't it.

Norway, 1940: Sub Lieutenant Harry Gilmour's first encounter with battleship action is not the adventure he had hoped for. Faced with a thankless task and ill equipped to handle it, Gilmour's inexperience leads to a damning allegation. His future hangs in the balance.

But then Lieutenant Peter Dumaresq steps in to offer him a lifeline - an advanced navigation course that will take him aboard a crack submarine, HMS Pelorus, under the command of a Royal Navy hero. Faced with a possible court martial, Harry chooses life underwater. Once aboard, however, Harry is confronted for the first time by the full horror of submarine warfare. If he can just overcome his fears, it will be the making of him.

Because survival itself is the challenge now. For Harry and the rest of the crew, the next depth charge could be the one that sinks them.

wow! What a thrilling read....lots of tension

fantastic read...lots of detail and delivered in an interesting way.tThe narrator is one of the best I've heard...reallly captures the moment...i had to switch off before bed when the escape scene was on...otherwise no sleep!!! I will definitely read the rest in the series.

WHY CAN THEY ALL BE LIKE THIS !

It's no good having a good story if the narrator lets it down. this is a good tale well read.

Submarines at war

I now have all the harry Gilmour books and must say it is up there with very best WW2 naval thrillers It is as good if not better than HMS Saracen and HMS Ulysses and is favourably comparable to the cruel sea, the fact is they are so well researched and written that they could be described as modern classics. In addition the narrator is perfect for this series not something you can say about every narrator.

Worth a read

Interesting account of submarine warfare WW2
A bit snobby in parts, accounts of rank and class very prominent. But overall enjoyable.

Great story.

I felt this was great story about Royal navy submarines in world war II . I didn't notice the narration but I could not stop listening, so I think that means the narration was very good.

A cracker for your book bucket list

Enthralling, realistic, with pace and elegance. Takes you to periscope depth, to the submariners' world, to 1940. Read and enjoy.
