About this listen

New places, new threats, new cards!

Whisked away from Earth and dropped into a world filled with magic and wonder, Wildermount was the closest thing Gareth had to a home. Now it’s been destroyed, torn apart by twisted nightmares lashing out at the world around them.

Fleeing to the arcane tower he discovered with friends and refugees alike in tow, Gareth finds himself involved in new peril. Something dark is corrupting the rainforest around the tower, and stopping it will involve traveling half the world away to a place unlike any he has come across yet. A land where the dead walk the streets as smokestacks blot out the sky.

Gareth will need all the levels and experience points he can get if he’s going to survive in this new land. New enemies await him, and new cards lay waiting to be discovered, along with an ancient and powerful secret. One that might just give Gareth the edge he needs in his quest to topple the gods.

Good but could have been better

I love the use of cards its brilliant and something different it has great potential but since book 1 finished the story has been lacking and has been padded out. As was the case in this book.

The characters spend time talking philosophy and statecraft yet they don't seem like they will try to rule. It does not seem relevant and the details about how things work on earth like the pound shop distract from the story.

There are some nice moments of fun and humour between the characters yet they are too few.

The characters don't really grow much in terms of level and the individual characters don't get much of a chance to shine. Having one of them just standing guard not fighting anything seems like a wasted opportunity.

I like card duels, strategy, exploring, shopping and quests yet that was rather limited in this book. Which was a pity.

The narrator did an excellent job.

I will try the next book in the series but I think the author can't decide what type of book to write. If the main quest is rushed due to a time limit the rest of the series will suffer. I don't like being negative but go back to basics gather cards get stronger go on different quests.

“If I’m going to be a meal then I’m going to be one that’s hard to swallow”

Another great book in a really enjoyable series. A great storyline with good characters and magic/battle system.
I found the card system a little difficult to follow at times but it didn’t diminish my enjoyment of the story at all.
Really well narrated too with some great character voices.
Looking forward to the next in the series.
This is my honest opinion on a free review copy.

disjointed

This story is all over the place. The idea is good but execution is over all poor, specially in the storytelling and plot. The narrator does a good job but it's not enough. I won't continue following this series.
