Summary

August 1941: As war sweeps across Britain and millions of men enlist, women must fight the battle on the home front. Fran always thought she would marry her childhood sweetheart and live in Massingham, the beloved pit village she has always called home. But the opening of a munitions factory in the north-east of England presents a new opportunity. Against her father's wishes and with best friends Sarah and Beth by her side, Fran signs up to join the ranks of women at the factory. It's dangerous work, but the friends discover that their lives are only just beginning.

Narration makes this difficult to follow

I am sure in paperback this is a great book, but the narration is strange and makes it difficult to follow.

Home front

Nothing better than a lovely Geordie accent narrating this book. Story of how hard things were for the families and what an important role young girls/women played… with a mix of romance & rivalry thrown in. Great book from start to finish.

Terrific

This book is hilarious and as a southern softie I have loved learning the words of the north like the marrows “marras “ It is also lovely to see the “marras “ are not ashamed to show their feelings where their women are concerned. Can’t wait to read another book from this author.

Interesting Novel

An interesting story combining the lives of mining families including a few within them who possessed a higher IQ but returned to their humble roots "to do their bit " for the war, and their women who volunteered to work in a dangerous munitions factory.
The narrator had good character voices but unfortunately I did not gel with the overall presentation.

Awful narration couldn’t get past chapter 6

The narrator is either too quiet or too loud or just cannot tell what she is saying had to keep rewinding.
Audible wouldn’t allow me to return so a waste of a credit
