Summary
Aged nine Joss came home from school to discover her father's suicide. She's never gotten over it.
This is the true story of Joss, 13 who is angry and out of control. At the age of nine, Joss finds her father’s dead body. He has committed suicide. Then her mother remarries and Joss bitterly resents her step-father who abuses her mentally and physically.
Cathy takes Joss under her wing but will she ever be able to get through to the warm-hearted girl she sees glimpses of underneath the vehement outbreaks of anger that dominate the house, and will Cathy be able to build up Joss’s trust so she can learn the full truth of the terrible situation?

A great book but very upsetting at times
As usual Cathy has produced a great account of her fostering memoirs. Joss' story was very upsetting at times because of the amount of times she was failed. There needs to be a massive improvement in how social workers support the foster carer and parent(s). When the foster and biological parents are both agreeing that a child should have particular boundaries in place, eg. the time they can arrive home, then the social worker should fully support those decisions, not over ride them putting the child at risk. I don't agree at all with the current practice that foster carers are not allowed to lock the door to stop a child leaving the property, they cannot be expected to keep a child safe effectively if they don't have any rights to prevent unsafe behaviours. Personally I feel that most social workers who aren't parents themselves are very ineffective and do not have the experience required to properly understand and advise what boundaries are appropriate. I've had to deal with SW's fir many years now(due to my step children being neglected by their mum and them being put on Child in Need or child protection many times over the last 12 years. Some SW's I have found are very good at supporting and advising, however some we have dealt with really haven't had a clue what is appropriate!! A few were completely useless as they were too scared of the loud spoken mother to tell her that the things she was doing were very seriously putting the children at risk of serious harm or death!!There is so much needs to change jn social work to ensure that children are properly protected from any abuse and to ensure that parents, step parents, grandparents and foster carers are all listened to and supported and advised properly.

Wow, poor kid
I've read all of Cathy's non-fiction books, and you feel for all the kids, they've all had a rotten time of it or they wouldn't be with a carer like Cathy, but wow, this one was just one thing after another!
Well written and beautifully read, as ever.
