About this listen

It has been just six months since David Herrick lost his beloved wife, Jessica. The grief is still an open wound. So when he receives an invitation to a reunion of long-lost friends, David's first impulse is to refuse. After all, two decades have passed since he was in the same youth group with these people. But the invitation comes from Angela, one of his wife's oldest friends, and mysteriously, she claims she has something for him from his late wife.

Reluctant but curious, David arrives at Headly Manor, an ancient house with an unsettling reputation. But life's most haunting specters are not a matter of location. In this honest, deeply moving novel of the heart, David and his friends search their souls for the courage to exorcise the ghosts of their own pasts.

Beautiful

The truth, sadness and joy of being properly human. Gentle and disarming in its honesty

Excellent!

It made me laugh and cry, and challenged the way I thought about prayer and intimacy with my Pappa! :)

Best listen on audible so far!

Moving and engrossing story with good insights on how people react and evocative descriptions of the English countryside.

Highly recommended. Marvellous!

Wow, what a book!

This is the best novel Adrian Plass has written. The prose is less clunky than Plass's other 'serious' novels, yet retains the insightful, light-yet-deep humour of the diaries series. I was laughing at some points and actually in tears at others (not something that regularly occurs)!. He was able to balance the hilarious, knifeblade insight into the human condition that is found in the diaries series with a real depth of feeling. We get to know the characters along the way as if they are our old friends. My only criticism is that it was too short. I'd have loved it to be longer!
