About this listen

These shivery tales were collected from the oral tradition, from people all over the Southwest, and represent the rich cultural diversity of the region, from the Ozarks to the Rio Grande, California to the Big Thicket. There are stories from the Spanish-American, Mexican-American, Cajun, Ozark, and other tranditions.

Old favorites such as "Mary Calhoun" and the Vanishing Hitchhiker are here, along with the ghostly mother who keeps her baby supplied with milk, the haunted mansion which was the model for Scarlett O'Hara's Tara, and stories laced with truly black humor.

Editor reviews

This collection of tales from the Southwest includes stories from Mexican-American, Cajun, Ozarkian and other traditions. The Youngs give the stories spirited, fast-paced narrations. Their voices are filled with suspense as the plots of the stories are quickly developed, but there are also touches of humor which is characteristic of scary tales from the oral tradition. The stories are scary - but not too scary - so that this audio presentation is satisfactory fare for middle graders to adults.
