About this listen

George Michael was an extravagantly gifted, openhearted soul singer whose work was both pained and smolderingly erotic. He was a songwriter of true craft and substance, and his music swept the world, starting in the mid-1980s. His fabricated image—that of a hypermacho sex god—loomed large in the pop culture of his day. It also hid—for a time—the secret he fought against revealing: Michael was gay. Soon his obsession with fame would start to backfire. As one of the industry's most privileged yet tortured men began to self-destruct, the press showed little sympathy. George Michael: A Life explores the compelling story of a superstar whose struggles, as well as his songs, continue to touch fans all over the world.

Acclaimed music biographer James Gavin traces Michael's metamorphosis from the shy and awkward Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou into the swaggering, dominant half of the leading British pop duo of the 1980s Wham!; he then details Michael's sensational solo career and its subsequent unraveling. With deep analysis of the creative process behind Michael's albums, tours, and music videos, as well as interviews with hundreds of his friends and colleagues, George Michael: A Life is a probing, definitive portrait of a pop legend.

So sad 😞

I enjoyed this book but felt Sad throughout. Being a massive George Michael fan the thought that he was so sad for most of his life really is upsetting. People used him, they didn't appreciate him his talents, his love. Very let down by Fadi and Kenny you both loved his fame and his money You hurt him more than we will ever know ...Karma

Such a brilliant insight into the true Genius.

Such a well written book, compelling from start to finish. So many reminders of what a talent George really was and so easy to understand his struggles. RIP GM , always loved.

Revealing and well researched....interesting listen

...there is a reason they call it the music INDUSTRY....show BUSINESS...there is far too much money in the entertainment world...they are people doing a job they love but no more valuable than cafeteria workers at schools or paramedics picking up the damaged bodies. And for any person growing up in pain and insecurity and depression, it can be a brutal reality.
....I feel for him and still enjoy listening and dancing to his music...and loved his take on the oldies.

Excellent book

I couldn’t stop listening to this book once I started. It’s an excellent depiction of a star who is superb at what he does for a living but sadly, also one who struggled because he never knew how to come to turns with his sexuality. Perhaps because of his Greek ancestry, and a discouraging father, who knows. What is evident is the fact that it dominated Michael’s mindset before he was ultimately cornered and humiliatingly outed by the American police. Unfortunately the “release” from his suppressed sexuality then resulted in a total u-turn and we see a guy who, perhaps irresponsibly, was “let loose” from his torture and just flipped and repeatedly put himself in compromising positions because of his addiction and desire.
That being the overwhelming picture that comes out of this book (something I’d thought before listening to it), it also depicts a talented, kind, generous , loving individual who always craved acceptance and sought to be at the forefront of his career, constantly striving to be at the top of his game.
A compelling read - I often asked myself how the author knew the minutiae of detail that he divulges. Highly recommended.

Disappointing. Probnot written for UK audiences.

Disappointing for this British listener. Impersonal, often unnecessarily chooses negative representations of George. I wanted to listen to an audio book that was full of the love & respect so many had for him, especially in the UK. And as for the narrator, surely a bit of research into how to pronounce things wouldn't have gone amiss.

Had everything but nothing

This was a shock to hear how much George struggled eith his appearance and sexuality and how unhappy and lonely he was.Akso how arrogant and ungrateful he appeared at times. However a portrait of one of the best loved singers of the 80's I enjoyed it. Not sure all the bad language was appropriate.

Strangely hostile biography of George

I agree with a previous reviewer that this biography appears to have been penned by someone who seems disinclined to like or admire George. For longstanding fans who are well researched on various events in George’s life, there are some surprisingly inaccurate and uncritical passages in this work that treat tabloid reports or comments by people/organisations who were in open conflict with George as though they are fact! This was a frustrating listen and consistently presents George as a small, silly person when nothing could have been further from the truth.

Annoying

I had to turn this off as the person who reading it has the most boring voice.
This isn’t showing George Michael for the true artist he is and always will be

Hated this

The author seems hell bent on portraying George as a spoilt brat instead of the beautiful, kind, generous soul that he was.
