About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Gemini by Dorothy Dunnett, read by John Banks.

GEMINI represents the final appearance of Nicholas de Fleury, who opened this series as a carefree, clumsy 18 year old apprentice in Flanders. Now he is in his thirties. The culmination of this amazing series sees Niccolo face his toughest battle yet, against an enemy who will tax every skill he has acquired over the course of the last few years...

A Really Great Series

Well I have to say as usual in every single one these books in the series there was an unexpected twist. Never even for one moment did I consider this twist. A fitting ending to a really great series. I have thoroughly enjoyed every single book.
John Banks is brilliant as the narrator all the way through. Other Narrators / actors take note, just because you can act and rely on the visual effect, does not mean you can narrate and hold a listening audience spell bound.

A wonderful journey from a wonderful author

Sad to finish this saga. Fabulous writing and fittingly good narration. Niccolo and Lymond my favourite heroes. Read and love.

End of a marathon listen

John Banks has narrated all 8 books in the famous House of Niccolo series - a marathon task and one which he has very nearly smashed. His accents - Polish, Scandinavian, African, Italian and French - have helped to delineate the multitude of Dorothy Dunnett's characters. His Scots accent is authentic and his medieval Scots praiseworthy.
But why didn't someone check the pronunciation ? Wynd is wined not wind, Cortachy is CORtachy not CorTACKY and lots of other slips (clipped for clyped) jar on the Scots ear.
This is nitpicking - he has rendered the convoluted story understandable and the whole series is a (very long) treat.

Authentic accent, but many mispronunciations.

Now I have reread the whole Nicolo series, and don't think it impossible that I will read the books yet again; there is so much content that different parts spring to the foreground on a second reading. The only annoying thing about this particular book is the mispronunciation of Scottish place names, and the use of "burg" instead of "borough" throughout. Anyone who has lived in Edinburgh knows it is Boroughmuir, and this doesn't preclude talking about the inhabitants as "burgers".

Why not a film?

Both the Niccolo and Lymond series are brilliant and I cannot understand how they have not been scooped up and turned into a fabulous Netflix series. Meanwhile it is lovely to have them on Audible.
