Summary

From the Sunday Times best-selling author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and A Darker Shade of Magic comes a stand-alone novel where The Secret Garden meets Stardust.

Sixteen-year-old Olivia Prior is missing three things: a mother, a father and a voice. Her mother vanished all at once, her father by degrees and her voice was a thing she never had to start with.

She grew up at Merilance School for Girls. Now, nearing the end of her time there, Olivia receives a letter from an uncle she’s never met, her father’s older brother, summoning her to his estate, a place called Gallant. But when she arrives, she discovers that the letter she received was several years old. Her uncle is dead. The estate is empty save for the servants. Olivia is permitted to remain, but must follow two rules: don’t go out after dusk and always stay on the right side of a wall that runs along the estate’s western edge. Beyond it is another realm, ancient and magical, which calls to Olivia through her blood.

Critic reviews

"A haunting and beautifully tilled garden of darkness, Gallant unearths the shadows - webs of family history, the price of deadly bargains, and the secrets we guard - a triumphant tale that can’t be missed." (Dhonielle Clayton, best-selling author)

Good enough to finish

Love how the author writes. The story gripped me up to half way but was slightly disappointed by the rest. I much preferred 'The invisiable life of Addie LaRue' by the same author.

Good but not great?

It was a good book but it didn’t have the WOW factor that I was looking for. The story felt original and i liked the world building. Would be interested to read something else for the author.

More conceptual than earlier works

I've always enjoyed V.E Schwab's work, a big fan of the darker shade of magic series and the sample for this one have great promise, dark and intriguing. It is a dark intriguing mystery, slow burning but that is fine, it keeps you hooked throughout. For me the end was just unsatisfactory, it's like this pressure building up and up and then nothing really comes of it. It's a real shame because up to the ending I was really enjoying it, loving the different characters and the story. suppose I'm just a little disappointed with the ending.

It's alright but takes a bit too long to go somewhere

It's a great setup and you don't know where the story is going and what will come next most of the time. However I feel like it doesn't pay off the end of it. The performance however it's spotless.

The thing is I have read so many books by the author I feel this pales against most of her other stories. But make no mistake it's a decent tale to be told.

Interested but...

it's a well read story, I love the plot and the darkness but there are a couple of plot holes. Overall, great story.

Surprisingly Good

I had everyone confidence Julian Rhind-Tutt would deliver an excellent performance. And I was not disappointed.

What surprised and pleased me was the edge of the seat story. The scene setting did a lot of the heavy lifting. The characters were sufficiently convincing that at no time was I distracted by them. It was a very adventurous tale with real thriller level suspense

A beautiful tale

A brilliant book, rich with imagination. The narrator is excellent and brings the different characters to life perfectly.

Hauntingly beautiful

A fantastic story, read beautifully by the narrator.
Full of rich descriptions and emotion that grips you and pulls you into the story.
Well written in a way that makes the reader/listener feel they have stepped into the book. One of the best books I've listened to in a while.

Really enjoyed but felt inconclusive

I really enjoyed this book but I felt a little bit let down with how the story was tied up at the end. I wanted a much better and more conclusive ending. I am giving it four stars for that reason and the narration five stars as it was brilliant.

enjoyable read.

I enjoyed this book but read it after reading "The Invisible Lives of Addie LaRue". Unfortunately I didn't find the storyline or characters as interesting.
