About this listen
After a five-year sabbatical following the tragic death of his wife and fellow agent, Alysha, Keona Rause returns to the distant colony world of Magenta to resume service with the Magentan Intelligence Service. With him he brings an artificial re-creation of his wife's personality, a simulacrum built from every digital trace she left behind. She has been constructed with one purpose - to discover the truth behind her own death - but Keona's relationship with her has grown into something more, something frighteningly dependent, something that verges on love.
Cashing in old favours, Keona uses his return to the service to take on a series of cases that allow him and the artificial Alysha to piece together his wife's last days. His investigations lead him inexorably along the same paths Alysha followed five years earlier, to a sinister and deadly group with an unhealthy fascination with the unknowable alien Masters. But as the wider world of Magenta is threatened with an imminent crisis, Keona finds himself in a dilemma: do his duty and stand with his team to expose a villainous crime, or sacrifice them all for the truth about his wife?

This could be the start of a beautiful friendship
Absolutely loved this. A real noir mystery feel about it, excellent world building, a rather too uncomfortably realistic plot involving (not a spoiler) immigration and racism, and *fabulous* characters. I enjoyed the main character, but for me it was Bix (spelling?) Rangesh who really stole the show. Then again, that could be down to the superb narration by Peter Noble, who picked just the right accent, to my British ears. He comes across as completely the life and soul of the party - and a bit of a nightmare as a colleague! I'm looking forward immensely to what I gather are two more books. Sequels, I hope. Terrible climate or not, I fancy spending more time on Magenta.

favourite audio book as yet this year
This has it all, sci fi thriller, police investigation, mystery and adventure. The plot is well thought out and the characters engaging using realistic banter. Fantastic narration. Just finished and downloaded the next one. So glad I took a chance on this one.
